Amelia waited. She waited, and waited and waited, until she finally heard the soft snoring that belonged to Millie from across the room.
"Hitch," she nudged her friend, "Millie's asleep."
"Hm?" Hitch answered sleepily.
"You wanted to show me something, let's go!" she whispered.
"Oh yeah, just gimme a sec,"
A moment later Hitch was sitting on her bed beside Amelia. She led her out of the cabin, and up onto the roof.
"The roof?" Amelia inquired, "last time we were up someplace high you nearly died."
"That was completely by accident, and you made me laugh so hard I fell. But then you caught me, so we're good."
Amelia chuckled, "So why did you bring me out here? Are we just going to talk on the roof?"
"Well, there's actually something happening tonight, and I wanted to show you."
"What is it?" Amelia asked.
"Look up."
Amelia looked up, and she gasped. Shooting stars were streaking across the sky, one after the other.
"You always are so amazed at things."
"Well, this is something worth being amazed about." Amelia breathed. "It's better than anything I've ever seen."
Hitch looked at Amelia, "Yeah."
"It really is."
Amelia turned to face Hitch and raised her eyebrows. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Hitch laughed, and Amelia detected a hint of embarrassment in her voice. She turned her attention back to the sky, and watched the meteors fly above them, lighting up the sky with their blazing glory.
"Anyway, congrats to you, Miss Top Ten!" Hitch punched her gently on the arm, smiling.
"Yeah, I still can't believe it. And the fact that there was three of us from our class who made it... It's just amazing. I don't deserve it though."
"Are you kidding? The commander chose you, not anyone else, you for that rank." Hitch berated her.
Amelia smiled, "Thanks, Hitch."
"Your welcome." Hitch looked at the sky, "And besides, by the end of training, I'll be up there with you."
"It's be a surprise if you weren't."
"Are you still planning on the Survey Corps?" Hitch asked.
"I think so. I still want to leave the walls, but I'm not so sure anymore. I mean, just wanting to go outside isn't much of an ambition, is it?"
"It's better than mine, because all I want to do is stay inside and safe. And get to sleep in."
Amelia laughed, "So you're still set on the Military Police?"
"Yeah, although it won't be much fun without you."
"Hitch..." Amelia looked at her again. Hitch's face was turned upwards facing the beautiful sky.
"Hm?"
"I know this isn't my place to ask, but... why do you hate your family so much?"
Hitch laughed, "Well, it's just that they never really understood who I am, and what I want to do. They always got angry at me because of my laziness and tendency to procrastinate, but when I would do something that most parents would be proud of their children for doing, they would compare me to my cousin, who was amazing at everything," tears welled in her eyes, and she took a shaker breath, "sorry about how I'm getting emotional, I know that it's weak."
"Weak?" Amelia exclaimed, before lowering her voice, "Hitch, you are amazing, and you don't need your parents to tell you that. And never be afraid to cry. Sometimes, you've just been holding it in for too long."
Hitch hugged her, and buried her face into Amelia's shirt. Amelia stroked her hair lightly, curling the soft wavy hair around her fingers.
Hitch gathered herself and faced Amelia. "So... are we going to talk about the bell tower?"
Amelia's heart rate increased, and she turned away. But before she could speak, footsteps sounded from the ground below. Hitch grabbed Amelia's arm and tugged her to the other side of the roof, where they would be hidden.
Commander Meijer appeared, walking across the yard to her cabin. Her thick plait was messy, and her hazel eyes were tired. Or at least, they looked that way from the way she was rubbing them.
Amelia's breath hitched. If the Commander caught them, they would be in massive trouble. Hitch squeezed her arm, and was silent for what seemed like one of the first times in her life.
The commander swung her head around to the roof, and they ducked their heads. After five seconds, Amelia decided to risk it and poked her head up. Commander Meijer was shaking her head, and she kept walking. When she disappeared into her cabin, the girls climbed back over to where they were.
"That was close," Amelia breathed.
"It was. She also looked really tired. I wonder if she's been losing sleep or something like that. But why though, I have no idea." Hitch replied.
"She's been doing a lot of work recently, like grading every single cadet here, and that would make anyone tired." Amelia said.
"True, true." Hitch looked at Amelia. Amelia returned her gaze and the two of them stared into each others eyes for a few moments before Hitch coughed and Amelia turned her head away. Amelia's heart was racing, for multiple reasons, one of which she didn't truly understand as of yet. But before she could think about it, Hitch held Amelia's face, and kissed her.
Amelia pulled away, her face flushed. Hitch turned away, embarrassed.
"I am so, so sorry." Hitch stuttered, "I- I should have asked and I don't know what came over me and I am so sorry for doing that when you weren't even sure about talking about the bell tower and, and-"
"Hitch!" Amelia exclaimed, "Breath. I didn't want to talk about the bell tower because I- I kinda like you and didn't know if you would like me back!" Amelia gasped at what she just said. The truth was out. Now nothing between them would ever be the same.
"Amelia, I..." Hitch looked at Amelia in surprise, "I wasn't sure if you would like me back."
"So you..." Amelia asked shyly, "like me?"
"Yeah, I guess I do." They looked into each others eyes, and Hitch tucked some of Amelia's hair behind her ear. And they kissed. But this time, it was Amelia who kissed Hitch, and they stayed together as long as they could, before they had to part for breath.
And they kissed again, their lips softly brushing against the others, and for the first time, Amelia felt like she had truly, truly, found love, in the place she least expected it to be.
Authors Notes
Yooooo!!!! Got another chapter done, and it was AmeHitch through and through! I don't know why, but I am getting very attached to these two, despite one of them being an oc. Hitch always gave me lesbian/bi vibes, and Amelia is currently figuring out her sexual orientation.
Thanks for getting this far with me, I'm trying to increase the quality of my writing without sounding unlike myself. Right now, I'm sitting in the living room with my older brother and his friend, and they're playing XBox while blasting music and yeah. I don't know why I told you that, I just felt like telling you that.
Tootles!
