The wind blew softly through the open area of the woods as a Hollow slowly disappeared, indicating that it was completely dead.
No cleansing, no going to Hell.
Just completely destroyed.
He preferred it that way.
It had gotten too close to her. That was a grave sin in his eyes, one that the Hollow paid for with death. His green eyes were unblinking as he turned his body toward the direction of her home, where she was sleeping soundly in her cradle.
He glanced up at the night sky and exhaled softly. He needed to get back before people noticed he was gone. His friend could only cover for him for so long...

20 YEARS LATER
She absentmindedly spun the pen between her finds, eyes unfocused as she sat on a bench overlooking the river where her mother died. Sayuri thought back to the events of earlier that day and what had occurred while she was at the university.

EARLIER THAT DAY
Rukia barely had a second to brace herself before Sayuri grabbed her by the arm and was dragging her out the door, leaving behind her baffled friends.
"What are you doing?" she snapped at the eldest Kurosaki, who stayed silent until they reached an empty classroom, dragging Rukia inside. Sayuri locked the door behind them before heaving out a sigh.
"What are you doing here?" Sayuri asked, leaning her back against the door with her arms crossed over her chest. "I thought last night was a one-time thing."
Rukia sighed and shook her head. "No. When I gave you my powers, I only intended to give you half. You ended up getting almost all of it."
Sayuri's eyes widened, shock evident on her face.
"Now, I'm stuck in this Gigai as I heal," Rukia continued, not noticing the expression on Sayuri's face or her tensed body.
Sayuri grit her teeth together, frustrated with herself. I took nearly all of her powers and left her helpless. She let out a humorless chuckle, catching Rukia off guard. Sayuri rubbed a hand down her face. Good going, Sayuri, good going. Now she can't go home.
"The reason that I am now attending your school is to ask you this: will you take over my duties as a Shinigami until my powers return?" Rukia asked, her tone almost bordering on pleading, though she would never admit it.
Sayuri stared at the Kuchiki with an unreadable expression.

PRESENT
She was brought out of her thoughts by someone calling out her name. She winced as the pen slipped through her fingers and she waited to hear it hit the ground, but it never did. She looked over to see a familiar man with silver-gray hair and brown eyes with a muscular build holding her pen with a raised eyebrow.
"You looked lost in thought," Muguruma Kensei noted, watching as she took the pen back from him. He took a seat next to her. "What's on your mind?"
Sayuri stayed silent for a moment, trying to find the right words to say. "I accidentally took almost all of the powers of the Shinigami assigned to Karakura Town," she muttered softly, so soft that Kensei almost didn't hear her.
