CHAPTER FIVE:
June 21, 1872: First Operation – Respite
Jimena celebrated her 10th birthday behind the walls of Intramuros, more specifically at Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion de la Concordia or La Concordia College. She had started her studies a few weeks ago, and even though she was allowed to go home every day because of the proximity of their home, she was not allowed to leave during the day – thus the celebration within school walls. (Personally, Jimena thought that calling it a celebration was too generous for the nuns mainly offered a mass for her; but still Jimena was grateful all the same.)
During the afternoon siesta that day, Jimena found herself reading the notebook in one of the college's spare rooms. Her classmates have tried inviting her – for instead of sleeping, the lot of them wanted to gossip – but Jimena graciously decline. Considering the events that had happened in the last few months, Jimena needed alone time for herself every single day.
First, concerning Sancho, Jimena still does not know what to make of it aside from the fact that she should be nice to him. He was after all a very important person and had made the past Jimena happy. As to how he did that, Jimena does not know for based on their previous meeting alone, Sancho has an incredibly dull personality.
Second, Jimena was worried as to whether or not she was moving too fast concerning her brothers. Although she was grateful for how understanding and open minded, they were, she still doesn't know what was the implication of these very fast developments.
Lastly, Jimena had been thinking about the future as of late. As to how she was coping with the coma or if she still exists? What if her being in the past caused a fatal accident in the timeline making her non-existent in the future? And if she still does exist, will she be able to come back? And when will she be able to come back?
"Your thoughts are too loud." Jimena was pulled out of her reverie upon hearing the familiar voice. As she looked up, she then saw Josefina sitting on the bed with a small smile on her face. "Yes, I can hear all of them."
Jimena was utterly dumbfounded by the whole thing that she instantly stood up and pointed her fingers accusingly.
"You're here." She said.
Josefina nodded.
"I'm here." She parroted.
Jimena resisted the urge to roll her eyes and focused on her breathing.
"This is the first time that I have talked with you in which I am lucid enough to care." She said. "Most of the time I see you when I'm sick or asleep."
"Well, as I have mentioned, I can hear your thoughts and your current questions," Josefina replied evasively. "And I believe that I can answer some of them; that's the main reason why I decided to appear." Josefina continued. "Truthfully as well, I believe that this is a long time coming. I think I owe you answers."
Jimena blinked and shakily sat down.
"I do have a lot of questions." She trailed.
"And I don't mind." Josefina shrugged.
So, Jimena asked away. First, she asked about the Sancho situation, to which Josefina replied 'that with what Jimena was doing, she was bound to meet Sancho sooner, so she had nothing to worry about.' Jimena also asked what she should do around him to which Josefina replied that 'she should not stress herself too much and just continue with her plans.'
Jimena also asked if what she was doing with her brothers was right and whether or not she was moving a little bit too fast to which Josefina answered that 'yes, she was doing it right and no, she's not moving too fast for her brothers were still young enough to think about uprisings, and revolutions, and war.'
