Atsumu sat by Sakusa during their class the next day. The two didn't talk. Well, they didn't talk about the other night. They talked about classes and normal life.
Sakusa got to know Atsumu a bit better, learning that he was going to try out for the same volleyball team that Sakusa had had his eye on in a few weeks.
"I dunno if I'll get in, of course," Atsumu was saying, and Sakusa glanced up at the board to jot down a few notes. "I still wanna try, though."
"I might try out too, actually," Sakusa mumbled, and Atsumu sat straight up.
"That'd be so great! You totally should Omi-kun! Then I can set to ya and you can spike!"
Sakusa smiled a bit under his mask at Atsumu's enthusiasm.
"When're you tryin' out?" Atsumu asked, tapping the desk to draw Sakusa's attention.
"Probably this weekend. Do you want to go together?" Atsumu's eyes shone, and Sakusa could hardly believe this was the same man who'd been sobbing to Taylor Swift.
——————————————————————
Tryouts were fantastic. The team was MSBY Black Jackals, and Sakusa already liked the coach and some of the hopeful members. He met the energetic, short, orange-haired kid who could jump ridiculously high, and he met an owl-like man with multi-colored hair who had an insane amount of energy.
Sakusa found himself hanging around Atsumu during it, almost clinging and hiding behind the only person he knew.
Atsumu laughed and teased Sakusa about it, and the spiker scowled.
But then when spiking practice started, Sakusa finally felt himself come alive.
Atsumu's sets were fantastic, and very easy to hit, so Sakusa could focus on force and aiming instead.
He was also fairly satisfied with how he'd done, but he wouldn't get results for a week or two.
Then there was the incident in the changing room.
Sakusa had waited until everyone was done. Or at least, until he thought everyone was done.
So when he went in and stripped his shirt off, he didn't notice Atsumu until he turned around.
A bright blush immediately spread over Sakusa's face, and he didn't have his mask on to hide it. He watched as Atsumu's eyes ran over his body before darting up to his face.
"Oh- sorry. I didn't realize you were still in here," Sakusa mumbled, hunching his shoulders a bit. Atsumu was in a white tank-top and his hair was messy from practice, so Sakusa had to force himself to focus.
Atsumu was straight.
He'd very clearly stated he wasn't gay.
He didn't like Sakusa like that anyways.
"Ah- it's fine, Omi-kun. You know I don't care." Atsumu laughed a bit, then rubbed the back of his neck and... he was blushing.
Sakusa cleared his throat a bit to snap himself out of his daze, moving over to the locker he'd used to get his regular clothes out.
Atsumu was quiet.
But then Sakusa felt his warm fingers trail over his back.
Breath hitching in his throat, Sakusa shivered a bit as Atsumu's fingers traced over his muscles and down his spine... over his ribs...
"W-what are you doing?" Sakusa whispered, frozen in place.
Atsumu just hummed softly in response. Sakusa let his head drop, hands resting on either side of his locker.
"What are these from?" Atsumu asked quietly as he ran his fingers over the scars on Sakusa's back.
Sakusa's mind froze.
"Omi?"
Atsumu's voice barely penetrated Sakusa's brain as memories hit him like a hail storm.
——————————————————————
"You useless piece of shit!" Sakusa's mom screamed at his father. The man cowered as she threw plate after plate at him, missing by inches. Shards of glass flew across the kitchen and Sakusa ducked quickly out.
"Honey, please-"
"Don't call me that!"
More dishes breaking.
Sakusa curled up in a corner, holding his hands over his ears. Yui was out with her friends, so there was no one for him to go to.
Then pain exploded over his back, taking his breath away. His heart shattered right along with the plate that hit him.
"Kai!" Sakusa's father yelled, and his mom screamed something unintelligible before a blow hit Sakusa.
Only one touched him.
Tears streaming down his face, Sakusa turned to see his dad grab his mom's arm and pull her away before she could hit him again.
"Don't- touch- me!"
"Don't touch me!"
"Omi! Omi please! Just breathe, it's okay! You're safe!"
Sakusa was jerked back into the changing room where he was huddled up with his forehead resting against the lockers, breathing heavily.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry- what did I do wrong?!" Atsumu yelped, and he had an arm around Sakusa's shoulders.
Taking another heavy breath, Sakusa slumped back, pressing his palms into his eyelids.
"Sorry," he whispered, trying to stop tears from forming.
"No- I'm sorry! It's my fault- I mean, I don't really know what I did, but it's on me."
Sakusa lifted his head, turning to press his back against the cool lockers and to face Atsumu, who was sitting cross-legged with tears in his eyes.
"I'm so sorry, Omi. I- I don't know what I was thinking."
"It's- okay," Sakusa said quietly, still trying to calm his racing heart and ignore the echoes of his mother's screams in his ear.
Atsumu didn't say anything, but he hesitantly put a hand on Sakusa's leg.
"Do you... want to talk about anything?" the fake blond asked gently.
Sakusa thought about it. He really did. His mind was spinning, trying to come up with yet another lie.
But as he looked into Atsumu's deep, thoughtful eyes
he knew he couldn't lie to this person.
