"What course are you taking?" Dameon asked, his surprise evident in his wide eyes.
We were stuck in the car, surrounded by the chaos of cars pouring into the school, our excitement mixed with a tinge of frustration over the traffic.
"Same as you, BSBA-M." A wave of realization washed over me; that explained why he always seemed to be waiting for me outside the classroom every morning and after classes, his eagerness palpable.
"It would be great if we became classmates, but we didn’t. Hopefully, in our second year," he said, glancing at me with a hopeful expression.
"Hopefully not," I shot back playfully, masking my own desire for that connection. "By the way, even if you forced me to come with you, thanks for the ride." I pulled out my wallet, trying to keep the mood light.
"Here. Maybe you’ll charge me for gas," I joked, handing him five hundred pesos. He laughed, shaking his head, and my heart fluttered at the sound.
"I wasn’t your driver. I’m your friend, right?" His voice was soft yet teasing, and I felt warmth spreading in my chest at his insistence.
"I already cut that off, right?" I raised an eyebrow at him, trying to maintain a facade of indifference.
"Then can we be friends again? That’s the payment I’ll accept." He looked at me with an intensity that made my heart race, as if he knew how much those words meant to me.
"Okay then, for the nth time, I’ll ask you, friend: you don’t have a girlfriend?" I asked, my curiosity tinged with a hint of nervousness, hoping to read his reaction.
"You’re my girlfriend, Miss," he replied casually, but it felt like a bolt of lightning struck me, leaving me speechless.
"W-what are you saying?" I stammered, a flush creeping up my cheeks, my heart pounding wildly in my chest.
"Girl friend, Miss. Babaeng kaibigan. Right? You’re my girlfriend, just like Kalliesha is yours."
How could I be so oblivious?
"Okay. Let’s get out now; we’re going to be late for class." I turned away, trying to shake off the surprise and the flurry of emotions swirling inside me.
"Friend, huh! Damn, finally seeing you smile at me again," he said, his eyes sparkling with delight, and it felt like the world around us faded away.
His infectious smile made me feel giddy inside, but I couldn’t let him see how much he affected me.
As we walked toward the building, Kalliesha suddenly blocked our path, and my heart sank.
"And why are you two together now?" she asked, her tone laced with suspicion.
I had completely forgotten she texted me earlier, asking to meet at the school gate.
I froze, panic washing over me. I had nothing to say, knowing she would pester me until I spilled everything.
I glanced at Dameon, desperate for a way out.
"Because I’m dating her," he said casually, his confidence rattling me to the core.
I shook my head, disbelief washing over me.
What was he saying? Damn this man.
I quickly approached Kalliesha, my heart racing. "Don’t believe him. He’s just being crazy again," I glared at Dameon, feeling a mix of embarrassment and frustration.
Kalliesha laughed, her eyes twinkling. "Why, there’s nothing wrong with that."
"He’s just a nice friend to me," I gritted my teeth, fighting the growing irritation.
"Kaibigan, let’s go. We’re all going to be late for our classes," Fabian said, tapping Dameon’s shoulder, with Asher beside him.
"Shut up, you two. Taniesha and I are going to—" I interrupted, my voice rising.
"No, I’m going with them. We still need to go to the library," I insisted, my gaze pleading with Kalliesha for support.
I sighed in relief when she nodded, sensing my urgency.
"Then I’ll go with you. I’ll just drop off Fabian," she said, and I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me.
As we headed to the library, the tension melted away, and I was left with a sense of normalcy. We spent almost an hour reviewing different subjects, the familiarity of studying soothing my nerves.
"Okay, we need to stop now, Kallie. We’ll be late for MM," I said, standing up and stretching, trying to shake off the lingering tension.
When I turned around, I realized Kalliesha was still seated, her head resting on her arms. My heart sank, realizing I might be losing precious time.
Panicking, I shook her awake. "Kallie, wake up! We’re going to get kicked out of here!"
She groggily protested, but I could see the librarian approaching, her expression stern, and my heart raced.
"Miss De Mavicos, Kalliesha, are you two causing trouble?" she asked, her tone heavy with authority.
"We’re just studying, ma’am!" I protested, desperation creeping into my voice.
"Go on, I’ll take care of it," the librarian said, dismissing us.
Kalliesha and I hurried out, relief flooding over us as we made it just in time for our next class. After two hours of lectures, I grabbed my bag and headed towards Kalliesha’s spot to talk about lunch.
I was about to twist the knob of the classroom door when it opened, revealing Dameon.
"Here’s your papers, Miss." He handed them to me, and my heart fluttered at the sight of him.
"Thanks for delivering these, but I can’t go with you. I still need to meet Fabian," I explained, glancing at Kalliesha for backup.
"I’m sorry," she said quickly. "I need to catch up with him."
I nodded, feeling a pang of disappointment as she left.
I turned back to Dameon, who was still standing there, and I felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement.
"Can I ask if you’d like to have lunch with me?" he asked, his voice hopeful, and I felt a flutter in my stomach.
"Your girlfriend will be mad at you if she finds out," I said, rolling my eyes, trying to hide how flattered I felt.
He smirked, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Right, but she’s so cute and mad at the same time." He glanced over my shoulder, making my heart race again.
Oh my God! I’m not ready for this!
I composed myself, attempting to maintain my cool. "She’s here. You’re really crazy, Dameon. I think you should go, or better yet, I can explain to her what you’re doing here."
As I walked out of the room to find her, I realized no one was around, and panic surged through me.
"Where are you looking?" he asked, blocking my way with a playful grin.
"Your girlfriend," I replied irritably, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Damn. I told you, YOU ARE MY GIRLFRIEND!" he shouted, his frustration palpable.
I quickly pulled away from him, startled, a rush of emotions flooding my system.
