I quickly opened my eyes and sat up in bed when I felt no one beside me. I looked around, remembering what happened yesterday. We had failed to go home last night due to heavy rain and ended up staying here together in this house. As I was about to walk out of the room, my phone rang. I quickly grabbed it, glancing at the caller ID.
Vette.
“Something wr––,” I started, but I stopped abruptly due to the loud voice on the line.
“Mommy!” It was our six-year-old, Darniesha.
“Proper tone, young lady!” I scolded her.
She may be a prim and proper child, but sometimes she has this attitude, especially when she doesn’t see me every morning.
“Sorry, Mommy. But why are you not here when I woke up?” she asked, her sadness evident in her voice.
“I’m with Daddy, baby,” I replied. I couldn’t lie and say I was at the office; it was Sunday, and I knew she would see right through it.
“Baby, huh? Who are you talking to?” I heard Dameon’s voice. I looked at him as he sat beside me, frowning.
“Sorry, baby. What were you saying, hmm?” I cooed, trying to irritate him a little while talking to our daughter.
“Yes, baby. Thank you, and see you later. I love you!” Before I could say anything more, he snatched the phone and quickly ended the call.
I tried to hide my smile and laughter as I looked at him. He was mad!
“Who’s grumpy now, Mr. Crazy Person?” I teased, but he just ‘tsk’d at me.
“Come on, let’s go down and eat breakfast,” he said, intertwining our hands as we walked down the stairs to the dining room.
We looked around the house; everything was now complete, except for a few things we still needed. Last night, we talked about a lot of things. We forgave each other and understood what happened. It was funny to hear Dameon’s stories about our past, even though I couldn’t remember them.
If only there were a way to go back and change my decisions…
But all those moments led us to where we are now. Maybe if we hadn’t taken the different paths we did, we might have failed. I believe our breakup led him to be successful; he became too focused on helping me remember our past.
I wish I had learned to listen and empathize back then because we were both just hurting—victims of complicated pasts that are now the foundation of our bond.
Don’t think that trials are meant to separate you; they are challenges that prove love’s power. Even after being hurt, you can still choose to love.
But remember, choose to love yourself first before loving others. Self-love isn’t selfish; it’s the key to loving others correctly. Loving yourself also serves as a shield against being easily hurt by others.
“Hey! You’re crying. What are you thinking about?” He quickly removed his apron and hugged me from behind.
“I’m okay,” I said, nodding and plastering a smile on my face.
“What time are we going home? Our daughter is already looking for me.”
He chuckled. “Only you, huh! Our daughter has favoritism; we should teach her.” I just laughed.
“You’re being overly dramatic. Stop that! Let’s eat; the food is getting cold.” We started eating and finished our meals.
