For months after everything went down, the guys worked tirelessly on the legalities that needed to be taken care of in order to even be remotely considered for the human adoption process. The amount of paperwork and background checks they all had to endure was criminal. Even though they were quick to make sure nothing was left out, they never got any replies from the government. It had been months and they were starting to lose hope.
They were lucky that Jin had followed through with everything he promised to do and that no one had a clue about the illegal activity Jungkook had done all those months ago. And even though Hobi stopped harassing Tae, the smirks he'd shoot in the tiger's direction solidified that he knew something had changed and that he'd gotten his way. The fact that your scent was completely removed from Tae served as confirmation enough.
Tae tried to continue working as before, except that every minute he spent in his office, he felt numb. Jimin barely cooked, opting to order in instead, and Jungkook took a semester off from school because he was unable to stay focused on his studies. He'd been struggling for weeks to stay on top of his classes, distracted by the loss of your presence. The worst part of all was that your scent still lingered on his pillows. There was no other surface in the house that held your smell, and when the sun went down, he'd press his nose to the surface and dream. He remembered the way your voice sounded, how he'd paint his love on your lips every night with a goodnight kiss. Your very existence, a wave that washed over his soul every night, had him losing himself in the echo of you. And when he'd cry his last tear, his body betraying him, he'd fall asleep—unconscious to the world around him.
Jimin tried his best to be the strongest knowing that his other brothers weren't very good with expressing their emotions, but the truth was he barely slept. Before he knew it, the sun would make its appearance, the muted light starting its journey to earth barely illuminating his room. He'd get up and make his way to the kitchen where he'd sit and drink his coffee while staring out into nothing. Some days he'd be there for hours until one of his brothers came in with a greeting, the cold coffee in his mug evidence of the loss of time.
Taehyung didn't speak to anyone very much. All the things he had to say had been said that day, when he was on his knees wailing his apologies. The guys never probed him for more because they already knew. At work Taehyung drowned himself in endless paperwork, even asking his co-workers to give him their load so he wouldn't run out of things to do. No work meant more time to think, and if he didn't have time to think, then he wouldn't feel pain. No matter how much data he inputted or how many cups of coffee he got up to pour, he felt no peace. He was just about to ask Jin for the rest of the day off when the devil himself called him into his office. Taehyung was quite surprised because this time he was certain there was no reason for it.
The walk to his boss' door was like a dark memory he'd long tried to erase but found that he'd never be able to seal it behind the recesses of his memory bank. It was all real, it had happened, and because he'd done what was right, he'd lost what he knew now with complete certainty was his mate. There was no healing the loss of a mate. You had been it—for all of them....and now...you were gone.
"She's pregnant." Came Jin's voice, but Tae was confused at what he was hearing because he didn't even remember opening the door, yet he was inside of Jin's office standing before him shaking his head to clear what he thought he misheard.
"Sir?"
"I said she's pregnant. The facility will no longer keep her because of it. According to her past records she was never successfully inseminated and had been unable to achieve pregnancy, but—"
"I–I'm sorry...what do you mean, pregnant?"
Jin chuckled and put down the manila folder he was reading from which contained all of your medical history. He cocked his head to the side and gestured for Tae to sit, but when he sensed the exasperation from the tiger, he thought better than to tease further.
