~Mikhail~
I didn’t know what to do. I wasn’t aware that Jon was in the city, and now he was here asking for Elle. I didn’t know what to say to him. I couldn’t possibly tell him to go away, Elle was his daughter. But I didn’t know what he wanted with her.
She looked at me, slight confusion clouding her hazed eyes. She was already in pain and my heart twisted to see her struggling. She tried to sit up, but I pushed her back down gently knowing that she couldn’t push herself too far. Her head must have still been throbbing, because she gave up weakly and sat back.
“I’m not going to let you strain yourself, you aren’t supposed to do anything that might cause your head to get worse. I told Jon he could see you, but I won’t let him see you alone. I’ll be here the whole time.”
Elle looked up at me drowsily and nodded, smiling weakly.
I smiled back, standing there and looking at her before turning towards the door. I glanced back at her one more time before opening the door and closing it behind me. I turned around, facing Jon’s expectant face. He was sitting in the waiting room, and stood up immediately as soon as he saw me come through the doorway.
“How is she? Can I see her?”
He started to the door, but I stopped him with a hand. He glared at me, shocked at my movement. I took a deep breath and started to talk, ignoring Jon’s incredulous stare.
“I will not permit you to see Elle without me being in the room.”
He stared at me, amazed and a little angry at my request. He was silent for a moment, but I did not take my arm off of his. I wasn’t going to let him pass until he agreed.
He gazed at me for another moment, his amazement slowly fading from his eyes, his worry for his daughter replacing his anger. He nodded wearily, and I gave him a small smile before opening the door to Elle’s room.
Jon rushed to her side, grabbing her hands and looking at his daughter. There was something in his eyes, something I couldn’t place. He stared at her, rubbing her hand softly. I sat down quietly in a chair across the room, waiting for someone to speak.
Elle turned her head slowly to meet her father’s eyes. She seemed confused and slightly surprised that he was kneeling at her hands. She gave him a small smile, assuring him that she was fine.
“What are you doing here Jon?”
She talked quietly, wincing when the sound rang through the room. Jon gave her squeeze in her hand, looking down at their clasped hands.
“I had to make sure you were ok.”
Elle smiled hesitantly, but I knew there was something more. He was too eager, he wouldn’t have been this crazed just to make sure she was ok.
Elle didn’t question it however, just smiled down at her father and closed her eyes, sighing wearily. She settled farther into her pillows before turning back to her father.
Jon looked down taking a deep breath before looking back at Elle.
“I did come here for something else.”
Elle looked at him, interested. I leaned in, placing my elbows on my knees. I knew there was something else.
Jon glanced at me before looking back at Elle. I narrowed my eyes, listening intently.
“Before you were born, your mom and I, we...”
He paused, leaving both Elle and I waiting impatiently.
“We what?”
Elle asked impatiently, leaning in intently, and ignoring the echoing sounds of her voice. Jon looked at her, a nervous expression flashing onto his face before he quickly covered it up.
“We had a child.”
Elle froze, staring at Jon’s face. Shock had taken over every feature on her face, freezing her body. Disbelief had taken over my mind as well, probably leaving me in the same position as Elle.
I came out of my shock sooner than Elle and asked the question Elle obviously couldn’t.
“What happened to this child?”
Jon glanced at me, the same unreadable expression flashing through his eyes. My eyes were wide, waiting impatiently for a reply. Jon looked back at Elle, finding the same expression in her face.
“We had to let him go, he wasn’t safe with us. The corporation was going to take him from us so we had to give him to an orphanage.”
Elle’s eyes were huge as she processed this.
“I have a brother?”
Jon nodded glancing back at me.
“Yes. And he’s closer than you think.”
I finally figured out the expression on his face. Regret.
