Chapter 8
Beep, beep, beep. Each beep as rang through the air and as it continued on made me curious to open my eyes and see what was making the noise. No matter how much I tried though I couldn’t wake up. My eye lids were heavy and immovable. My breaths remained shallow even though I struggled to take a deeper breath. My eyes moved restlessly and it probably looked like I was having a nightmare to anyone that was watching. Something was very wrong with me.
Many long moments passed with only my thoughts as company until I was finally even able to open my eyes slightly. After that I put most of the effort I could into opening them fully and then took in my surroundings. I was in a plain grey room with only one window and two mismatched chairs. Also in the room were a bunch of machines all hooked up to me, including the source of the beeping, a heart monitor.
I strained to move my head so I could see the rest of the room because despite it being a hospital and supposedly being safe, I just wasn’t buying it, I didn’t know what dangers could be masked by a seemingly normal room.
“Damien, thank god you’re awake,” Liz exclaimed as she opened the door and walked over to a chair. I gave her a small smile, as if to show her I was indeed alright. She grabbed my hand a squeezed gently after she had taken one of the chairs beside my bed.
“So what happened?” I asked. Liz shook her head slightly, telling me to not ask anymore questions. As I thought about it I realized it would not be good to talk of supernatural things where unsuspecting humans were going about their day in case they overheard us.
“Ah, I see you are awake, Mr. Sullivan.” I looked at the doctor in his pristine white coat interested in what he would say next and sure enough I wasn’t disappointed. “You were brought to the hospital earlier today because you had been poisoned,” said the doctor.
“Poisoned?” I asked incredulously. I looked around the room and Liz, and Erik who had followed the doctor in the room both had serious expressions on their face leading me to believe this was real.
“Yes, poisoned, do you recall how you were poisoned?” the doctor said poised to write something down on the clipboard he was holding. If I knew how I was poisoned or even who had poisoned me I would have found some antidote. I shook my head wordlessly. “Well regardless of whether this poisoning was accidental or not I’m reporting this to the police, I am legally required to do so,” the doctor stated.
Liz, Erik and I all exchanged alarmed looks, we couldn’t have the human society asking questions about a poisoning, their questions might eventually lead to exposing the hunter society, and that could never be allowed to happen.
Erik nodded towards the door signalling to the doctor that he wanted to talk. I didn’t know how he would deal with this problem but I hoped he would find someway to deal with it quietly and discretely. Perhaps he could find some way to bribe the doctor.
Liz filled a cup of water with a pitcher of ice cold water on the table beside my bed and held it to my lips for me to drink. I swallowed gratefully as water ran down my parched throat and left me feeling refreshed.
“I got the doctor to hold off telling the police about this until we can find a more permanent way to shut him up,” said Erik as he entered the room once more.
“How did you do that?” asked Liz. Erik shrugged and took the second seat in the room. That was a temporary fix; I had no idea how to get permanent solution.
“I have my ways, but we should leave as soon as possible.” Liz looked suspiciously at Erik but didn’t say anything more. Erik pulled out his phone as soon as Liz had looked away.
