It was a while later that Gandalf disappeared. We had passed thtough many lands, but had met no mishap and I could see Bilbo was rather cheerful until Gandalf disappeared. No one could remember when they had seen him last or whether he had said anything before he left. It had started to rain. It dropped off the dwarves' beards and cloaks and even went into the food bags. This wasn't much of a problem for me as I was used to going without much food but it wouldn't be good for bilbo.

A while later we crossed an old stone bridge over a river bordered with creaking reeds. I heard Thorin say something about supper and where we were going to sleep.
"Just where a wizard would have been useful, too" grumbled Dori and Nori. I wanted to remind them that a wizard was useful in any situation, and that wet food and nowhere to sleep was no exactly the direst problem in middle earth- but I thought it was probably best to keep my mouth shut. Eventually we (or should I say they. It didn't really bother me where we slept- usually at night I was awake anyway.) decided to sleep where we were as there wasn't really anywhere else. This decision was largely made by Thorin, as he didn't seem to bothered about where we slept either. Suddenly I spotted a dim red light through the trees. "What's that?" I said. Everyone turned to look at me snd I was beginning to wish I hadn't said anything when balin saw it too. "The light over there. That's what she means." After another long and heated argument it was decided that bilbo should go and see what was going on.

However, when we turned round to the ponies we saw they had all been taken! A few of the dwarves let out a roar of rage and bilbo was quickly hustled towards the light to go and investigate. How was bilbo supposed to find the ponies? He had no experience and even I was beginning to doubt Gandalf's words about him. I knew the dwarves boots and heavy way of walking was no good for secrecy but I could have gone! Despite his incompetence, I did care for bilbo, and so I was worried when he didn't come back for a good half an hour. The dwarves decided to follow him, but with the amount of twigs snapped and branches rustled the whole of the wild knew what was happening. Eventually we got to the clearing. Kili, seeing bilbo had been caught (of course) charged in, firing arrows. The reat of us were forced to make an attack to and so we all charging in, brandishing various weapons. I shot arrow after arrow but it didn't seem to make much difference. In fact, none of our efforts seemed to be making much difference. Before I knew it we were all caught and tied up in sacks.

We tried various tactics to try and prolong the time before we were cooked (including claiming we had parasites) but they seemed to be prolonging the time enough themselves! They argued and argued and argued over boiling, roasting, steaming..... I had never heard so many different ways to cook something. Just as it seemed they had settled on boiling us, they started up again. A new voice, ( further away, but sounding exactly like each of the trolls in turn,)kept contradicting another, until they were all fighting. I saw the sun begin to creep up through the trees. There might still be hope! If the trolls were outside in daylight they would turn to stone. And, sure enough, the sun began to creep further and further up until it was straight in the middle of the sky. I heard a voice thunder "may the dawn take you!" Gandalf ? It was. He came and untied a few of the dwarves and me, and then we untied the others. Thorin asked "what made you leave us?" "Looking ahead" he said
"And what brought you back in the nick of time?"
"Looking behind"
