A young girl with almond skin and black hair done into two low braided ponytails reaching to her mid-back was simply sitting at her kitchen table thinking about what was to come.
"Are you ready for school?"
The familiar deep voice seemed to jolt the young girl from her staring contest with the wall.
"Hmm, oh! Yes! I'm ready, I packed last night just to be sure." Talia's hands quickly found themselves wrapped around one of her back braids while her father approached her to kiss her forehead.
"And you probably double and triple-checked this morning as well, am I right?" Her father then chuckled at her suddenly annoyed expression.
"Dad! You already made that joke last night, it wasn't funny then, and it isn't funny now!" The girl pushed him away but that only made him laugh harder.
"Come on dad, if you're gonna drive me to school then we should get going." She then got up and grabbed her small bookbag before walking to the door.
The taller man blinked before walking behind her. "Don't you want breakfast sweetie?" He asked gently once he stood behind her at the door but she only shook her head while opening it.
"I already had a bowl of cereal, I'm alright." Sure enough, when he looked back to the kitchen he noticed the singular washed bowl and spoon in the dishrack. He sighed before looking back at his daughter who was now waiting at his car.
"You wake up too early you know."
That statement actually brought a grin out of his daughter, "No, you wake up too late old man." The offended gasp she got in return was enough to make her laugh out loud and her father's playful eyeroll showed that he wasn't truly bothered.
The two easily slid into the car and then headed off to Collège Françoise Dupont.
"I wonder if any of your friends will be in your class this year." Her father took a glance at her from his peripheral only to notice the way she slightly slouched in her seat making him then clear his throat quickly.
"Maybe..." The girl then took to staring out the window for the ride as he bit his lip. He didn't want to bring up any sore topics so he decided to stay silent until he finally pulled up in front of the school.
"Thanks for bringing me, dad." She turned back to him with a smile and he grinned back.
"Of course, I'll always be your dependable old man!" He offered a proud beat to his chest to show it.
"You're not that old, don't worry."
"Thanks kid, but I might be, I have the gray hairs to prove it too!"
She chuckled before leaning over to give him a kiss on the cheek. He affectionately gave her a pat on the head that left her with a small smile and a happy feeling to start her day.
She pulled away and backed out of the car before waving at her dad as he pulled off. Once she couldn't see him anymore she turned to look at the familiar building and felt the same intrusive feeling she did at the start of every new year. Anxiety.
She took a few small breaths before going inside, the fondness she felt from spending time with her father would be her battery for today, and as long as nothing happened, then she should last through the whole school day at least.
Once she walked inside she was greeted by the familiar sight of a mostly empty building. She definitely preferred to pick her seat as early as possible before there were too many other students there as well.
It wasn't hard to find Ms.Mendeleiev's classroom, especially since she was in the same class the year before, but she wondered if the students would be the same. Most of the students in her class were well behaved mainly because Ms.Mendeleiev was a strict teacher, but students like Aurore and Jean always stood out.
