Poison Study is Maria V. Snyder's first book, and the first of it's 6-book long collection. One of the most interesting books I have ever read this year, it's sheer plot studded all over with twists and turns, but the biggest one is one no-one was expecting at all.

'Poison study' is set in the country on Ixia, in a paranormal world where a sheet of pure magic encompasses the world. Magicians and mages alike are the sole users of this power blanket, although 15 years after the takeover of ixia, magic is illegal, and young mages must find a way to escape to Sitia, the country that borderes the southern part of Ixia. The protagonist, a yound lady called Yelena, was inprisoned and awaiting execution for murder, until the mysterious form of Valek Icefaren the assasin gives her an offer she can't possibly resist.

There are many plot twists in the story, the biggest, though, being when she meets one of the 4 master magicians from sitia, who was spying on Ixia, and she offers to help Yelena control her magic. Yelena then realizes what Irys, the master magician , means, and asks for a year to learn how to control her power. Irys grant her the wish,  and after a couple of months, Yelena find the horrendous plot to kill the current leader of Ixia, Commander Ambrose. She manages to destroy the plot, and learns about her past.

Overall, 'Poison study' is a book for anyone who loves mystery, magic and murder.
