I looked over at the girl. I hadn't noticed that my jaw had dropped an unflattering amount. As my eyes wide stared at her, she then suddenly all calmed down, looked at me and smiled a bright smile. "So sorry for that inconvenience sir." she said with a little side smile and tilted her head slightly, which made her hair fall to one side. It was a funny sight, she went from a feisty, rather intimidating girl to almost innocent looking. "You dropped something.." she said cockily. I quickly realised and shut my mouth a little too quickly. "I'm.. thank you. I uhm," Suddenly my mind had gone blank, "That woman," I continued, " she.." I tried to come up with words to say, evidently nothing sensible came out of my mouth. She, on the other hand, seemed to know exactly what to say. "Yeah i know right, a total bitch, fucking hell, I'm sorry on her behalf.. And by the way," She added, "your earring is quite cool if i do say so myself." She smiled again, this time with satisfaction. In that little meantime I had come back to my senses and asked her the only logical thing to ask her then and there, in my opinion. "Miss.. ?"
"Are you asking for my name?" She said and her eyes lit up in amusement for a second.
"Yes, I suppose I am." I replied.
"Oh you suppose you are, how adorable," she said, still smiling, that twinkle returning to her eyes, "Well my name is Ivy."
"Miss Ivy, I am very grateful for your heroic act." I now tried to be cocky too, a lost cause, that was obvious.
"Just Ivy, kind sir." She bowed slightly and elegantly.
"Well then Just Ivy," I now too, was smiling,
"I owe you."
She giggled softly and tilted her head the other way. "A free coffee is what you owe me, I believe. And, by the way, you are not funny, smartass."
I couldn't help but let out a laugh. "Oh i wish i could grant you that, but my boss would fire me the second he found out i gave away a product for free. Though i can take you out for a.." She interrupted me "Don't even try it loverboy, i may have called you not unattractive but that doesn't mean i am so madly in love with you, got it?" I was surprised and startled by this response. "I mean, Yeah of course." Is all I could really bring myself to say.
She smiled at me one last time, turned around and walked back to the table at which she was sitting, a round table for one up front near the big glass through which you could observe the street. She put the laptop on which she had been working on for the last 2 hours back in her bag and walked towards the door. I truly wanted to say one last useful thing but all I managed to get out was a faint "Bye,uhm.. see you again sometime?"
She, already halfway out onto the street, looked back and yelled "Oh this is definitely my favourite coffee shop, so till we meet again good sir, ciao!" After that she closed the door and I was left alone in the cafe. The mood in the room had suddenly turned a lot more pleasant. That was until I looked at the clock. "For fuck sake, still 35 more minutes." I whispered to myself and I started counting down the minute again as I,for the millionth time it felt like, started cleaning the entire cafe.
