____________The tears in the corners of your eyes were beginning to spill over, they burned after being held back for so long. It didn't even feel like you were letting yourself go of anything, it just felt like another reason to not let yourself cry at all.
If you knew it would hurt this bad, would you ever have done it?
The answer was yes. No matter what anyone said, or what you wanted to believe, you knew you would have gone with him that night either way.
Because you 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 him.
At least, that's what you told yourself.
Even after he pulled over the truck in the middle of nowhere. Even as he began to strip you of your clothes as you fought and yelled.
Even after everything he'd done to you that night, you knew damn well that once you were done crying here, on this grassy hill overlooking town, you'd run straight back to him. It's not like you had anyone else to run to.
He would comfort you and tell you he was sorry, or spill some other bullshit that you comprehended and understood was untrue. But you'd stay. Because you always did.
By now, you were wiping your eyes raw with your old sweater, alternating between each eye as one seemed to weep more as you cleaned the other. You wanted to bury yourself right at this spot, where it was so quiet that your ugly sobs and snotty sniffles were the only sounds you could hear.
It was so peaceful...
You heard a twig snap, and a following gasp of someone who's been caught.
Quickly, you batted your eyes dry and wiped your face off with your sleeve in one motion, grinning and flipping your hair playfully as you turned to face Dream.
He was standing next to the tree you'd been sitting under with a hand propped against it for support. One foot was still in the air from stepping on the stick and panicking, and he set it down to fix you with a pointed stare.
"...You're not really good at that." He finally said, after a small moment of silence between the both of you.
You chuckled with soft edges of returning tears in your voice, "Not as good as you. "
Without responding, the guardian placed himself next to you, tucking his legs against his chest and looking up and out at the stars. You looked down at the lights of the city, completely lost in thought but still strangely aware of Dream next to you. He didn't say anything, and you really didn't need him to. It honestly felt better to just have him by your side, not leaving or asking prodding questions.
At some point, you let your gaze rise a bit, looking at the horizon. It was still the dead of night, the line of sky was pitch black and consuming. But within it, there were a couple stars.
These stars were set apart from the others. There were about three of them, clustered together on the dot of the horizon against the bleeding and powerful darkness around them. It was awe inspiring in some way. Like something you'd see in a Disney movie.
"How do you suppose those stars are able to shine so close together? " Your voice was cracking, but you didn't care.
Dream shifted, laying his chin down on his knees to glance at you and back at the sky,
" Those ones? Out on the horizon?"You nodded, flicking your attention to him as he spoke.
"Well... Scientifically, those stars shouldn't be able to sit so close without exploding on one another, sending the smallest stars flying in all directions to leave the biggest alone. So, I guess they're already unique in that way. " he cracked a small smile, sniffing.
"But those three were all born at the same time. From the same cloud. During birth, they were so close that they almost morphed together into one giant star. But they had just enough space to form some unique protective film between each other that wraps around all three of them. "
Dream cocked his head in your direction, letting his head rest on his legs as he looked at you,
"They protect themselves from each other, but also help each other out. "
You weren't very close with him. Sure, at the moment you noticed that he'd pressed himself against your side during the time you were stargazing, but all in all you weren't emotionally close.
You'd see him on the street every morning and he'd wave to you and smile, but he does that to everyone. One time he bought you some lunch as a thank you for helping him with an errand, but that was just him being himself.
You never saw him as anything different. As anything 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦, and to be thinking about it at a precious moment like this made you feel horrible. Like you were taking advantage of the one moment he decided to be raw and open with you, to be 𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦.
"That sounds beautiful... " you muttered, shifting to look back at the stars.
You could feel Dream's eyes on your face, small drops of tears falling from his chin.
He let himself flop down onto the grass, folding his hands across his chest and taking a deep breath.
You felt like you were on the verge of crying yourself.
But you weren't thinking about 𝘩𝘪𝘮 anymore. And that was the most heroic thing Dream has ever done for you.
