I drew the cover :D
Just moved to Japan, so expect a couple more updates in the next few days! Not just for this story, but some of the others too!
// Trigger warning!! Suicidal indication and slight gore/death! //
________I could see it.
The red glow illuminated the ground before me ever so slightly, just enough for me to see the trap layed below the blanket of dying grass. It was rusted and orange at it's clawed tips, bloody and filled with grime. If I'd fallen into it, I wouldn't have been the first.
Not in a place as dark and lifeless as this. I hadn't seen even a hint of life anywhere. At least other than this, and the red orb hovering in the woods beyond, watching like a hunter watches it's prey.
The red orb curved up at the bottom, "Aren't ya gonna come closer?" The voice grumbled, so low that my mouth made an audible click as it snapped shut. "Bad eyesight, ya know? Would love to see yer pretty face up close~"
I was frozen. Yes, I could see exactly where this bear trap was, but that didn't render me 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 in any slight way. Who's to say that the monster hadn't set up more, where it was impossible for me to see? Or more fatal ones, searing straight through my skull and killing me instantly.
That sort of death might be better than whatever awaits me at the edge of the woods. He wanted me to come closer. Surely, once I navigated through the onslaught of traps, I'd die a horrible death either way.
I bet this was just a game for him.
"No, no thank you... " I muttered, spinning to retrace my steps back to the safety of the snow covered path.
A bemused sputter sounded from behind me, but I was too far gone to care.
" Yer just gonna walk away?! "
I dared a glance back, quickening my pace upon seeing the light gone. Snow crunched under my boots as I found the path again, worn and used beyond belief.
"That wasn't part of the 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘪𝘪𝘪𝘪𝘪𝘪𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘵𝘵! " the monster growled.
His voice surrounded me, engulfing my entire body in its veil. I couldn't tell where he was, the sounds of his movement seemed to come from the very tree tops lining the dirt path.
There was only one way for me to go as I ran, the path was straight.
I couldn't see the end of the forest at all.
I was trapped.
Suddenly I stopped sprinting, spinning around with heaving breaths and shoulders slumping forward. There was not a sound to be heard besides my own embarrassingly loud gasps and the whistle of wind through tree branches. But I knew he was listening.
"Okay, okay, that was 𝘯𝘰𝘵 fair! Give me a handicap! " I yelled.
I was tackled from behind, bony hands wrapping around my waist and absorbing the impact of me hitting the ground.
"I'll give ya a 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘱 alright..." his mouth was touching my ear and his voice was low. My hands were behind my back, pressed to my body by his weight. My chest was hurting from the jabbing stones on the ground, blocking my air.
A small growl and I was lifted onto my feet and brushed off.
"You suck at this. "
I smirked, flicking the skeleton monster between his sockets. The sound echoed in his empty skull and he frowned.
