"I don't understand," I find my voice but my heart still sputtered, "why do you look just like me?"
My lookalike, Princess Misty, walks over to take my hand in hers. Her semi-translucent green wings that she tucked close to her back sparkled under the light coming from the large arched windows in the grand walls.
"Locksetta, there's much you need to know but only so much time for us to explain it all to you. We were born on the same day, birthed by the same mother," she pauses letting the words set in, "but while you were born on earth, I was born here, in The Prairies."
"That does not make sense, how could that even be possible?" I ask aloud to no one in particular, I felt dizzy with the weight of this new knowledge.
"The curse on your family runs deeper than blood, my child," Nora says after a moment, "the dark magic that encases your people stole more from you than you may ever know. It's consuming, that way it sets a motive for you to end it."
"That still makes no sense, Nora, how can the curse want me to end it? Isn't that contradictory?"
"It may seem that way but the universe works around the principle of conservation of energies, to bring complete balance once more, this curse needs to end. Otherwise more destruction will be brought to your family and our worlds in general as well. Now you may be wondering why your family specifically, and you will be finding that out very soon."
I felt myself tremble, but the warmth from Misty hand felt like a safety net. I smiled tiredly at both of them and turned back towards David.
His brows had shot upwards almost to the point they disappeared behind the pieces of hair that fell over his forehead. His lightly freckled face devoid of its usual color. He looked tense but didn't contribute to the conversation so Misty continued on.
"Locksetta, you need to be prepared for so much to come. That pendant you're wearing," Misty glances at the silver chain around my neck.
My hand subconsciously fingers the chain that was now cool to the touch. When I changed into my dress earlier I'd noticed the single pendant dangling on the chain. It was a silhouette of a werewolf.
"What about it?"
"It will transform you and David into which ever pendant you choose, right now you can only transform into a werewolf. But beware, in the transformed state you will be vulnerable to that which all the creatures respectively are vulnerable to."
Misty shares a glance with Nora and then Nora begins speaking, "you may find yourself in need to transforming back due to a vulnerability, but you have to take great care to transform back only when you're absolutely certain you are safe. When returning to your human form you would be completely exhausted. It takes great energy to change the anatomy of your body to a molecular level."
I stare aghast at both of the lady fairies in front of me: the kind but serious face of the queen, and the much softer and more familiar face of Misty.
I wanted to disbelieve them but the urgency in their voices told me it was all true. Besides, I'd already gone through so much with David on the first riddle. I could not even begin to imagine what other things I needed to prepare myself for.
"How will she use it?" David's voice breaks the silence.
"We will discuss all that tomorrow when you've rested fully. You've both had a trying day today," I try to interject but she raises a hand with a small smile pulling at her lips, "I'll have the chefs know to prepare an early dinner and then you'll both be dismissed to your beds. You need all the strength you can muster for tomorrow."
I felt my cheeks heat up. Queen Nora sounded like mom just now. My mother too was stern when it came to me getting ahead of myself as I always did. I gave Nora a shy nod and then turned to David after they both said their goodbyes and left.
