Chapter 3
"So, are we going to ride in my car, or no?" Emers asked, raising his brow in question.
"I guess so, since I don't have one to ride in," I simply shrugged, nodding my head. I wanted to get close to him, to understand what was going on inside his head. He was just so confusing and mysterious, giving off an ''I'm bad and I know it'' vibe. He was always so off handedly cool, the cool as in the 'scary' way. But, I was a pessimist, always thinking of the possible bad outcomes of situations and problems involving people. I had persistently opposed to becoming a pessimist again and again, but just kept becoming one over and over and over.
I had predicamently persuaded myself to never again get scared of people I didn't know. I had just thought that that was brusque and barbaric of me. I knew that some people off handedly came off as perempatory because of their attitude and stance. "Okay, well follow me," He gestured while walking toward his car.
His car was a turquoise mustang with white stripes on the sides. It was in fact gorgeous. "Woah, it's gorgeous." I gushed, eyes wide.
Emers just laughed and mumbled something under his breath, looking at me smiling.
"What?" I questioned. I didn't know what he had said and I wanted to know.
Emers looked uncomfortable. "U-uh nothing." He stuttered, looking the opposite way. He had started rubbing the back of his neck and I knew right then and there that he was nervous.
"Okay." I said and I knew that he didn't want to talk about it, so I just kept quiet, not wanting to make him even more uncomfortable than he already was.
Our conversation was stopped short when we heard screaming. I was scared and stopped moving all together. Emers on the other hand, looked calm like there wasn't anything going on around him. I kept standing there with wide eyes, unable to move. "Uh, what's going on?" I had finally found my voice but it was scratchy.
"I'm not too sure." He muttered, but I still heard what he had said. "But I need to go uh see if someone is hurt or not." He started to move but I grabbed his arm in an attempt to stop him.
"You can't." He tried shaking his arm out of my grasp but I held on, not wanting him to leave me alone, by myself.
He gave an apologetic look and frowned. "I, I have to." He shook his head and closed his eyes. "You don't understand. I need to go see what's wrong. There could be someone that's severely injured and I'm just standing here doing nothing but talking." He was getting angry now, his fists clenched and fingernails digging into his palms. His eyes were narrowed and his jaw stiff, grinding his teeth.
"Fine, you can leave." I jerked my hand from his arm, suddenly mad. I didn't care that it was pouring down rain, or that my clothes were sticking to me like a second layer of skin, all I cared about was getting away from him. I turned on my heel and walked a few blocks and stopped when I heard another scream. It was closer this time. "Just...go." I hesitated to say anything "Go save that damsel in distress. I don't care." I shook my head in disbelief.
The next thing I knew, he was right behind me. "Just go to my car and lock the doors, if I'm not there in twenty minutes, don't come looking for me, just drive to your house and lock all doors." He whispered, handing me his keys.
"Okay." I instantly agreed, suddenly scared for my life. I tightly grasped the keys in my right hand like my life depended on them and in the case we were in, my life did depend on those keys.
"Alright. When I say run, you run and whatever you do, do not look back, I repeat do not look back." He gripped my shoulders gently but tightly. "I don't want you getting hurt because of me." He pulled me into a hug, resting his chin atop of my head, pulling me close. He smelled of soap and laundry detergent and that wasn't a bad combination. We pulled away and out of no where three black convertibles drive slowly across the street, heading straight for us. Emers pulled me close once more, protectively.
