. . . . . . . . . .

The weather forecast didn't lie. It was the end of march, but the clouds still managed to spit out little, white snowflakes. It was cold and not nearly enough for the snow to stay, but the children you passed all screamed in excitement.

Freezing, you reached your destination and quickly slipped in through the door of your favorite bookstore. The building was warm and well lit, and it smelled like books. Perfect.

Greeting the receptionist with your usual "Good morning", you moved to the back of the store and turned to the aisle you always find the best books in. Usually, no one else except you is there, and you'd be able to focus on browsing the shelf on new treasures of literature; but today wasn't "usual".

Today, a tall girl with short, black hair stood in your aisle, and dark eyes trained on the books lining the wooden racks. She was so absorbed in her search, that she didn't notice you freeze up and stare at her from the end of the corridor that the bookshelves formed. It was not until she reached for one of the novels, that you spoke up.

"Ooh, that one's really good!" She turned to you, surprised that she was not alone anymore. She just stared, so you continued: "It's one of my favorites... Have you read anything from the author before?"

She hummed. It wasn't really an answer, you could've counted it as either yes or no, so you pressed on. "'Hm' as in yes, or no? Really, a simple hum isn't much of an answer, far from an obvious one at that." She turned away from you and walked down the aisle, not wanting to talk to you, but you had other plans.

"I'll take that as a no" You walked up beside her, not letting her get away that easily. "If you wanted, I could give you a whole list of books from them. I've read them all, they're really great! For example- ""Are you always that chatty when it comes to strangers?" Your mouth snapped closed as you saw the glare, she was giving you. Swallowing a bit too loud, you smiled "No, but when I meet someone who takes a liking to one of my favorite books, I can't help myself"

She sighed, but you continued anyways. "My name's Y/N L/N. My offer still stands if you tell me your name?" Your attempt to sound somewhat flirty was met with another sigh, but to your surprise, the woman humored you.

"Mai Zenin" she smiled, and you felt your cheeks heat up. 'Talk about fast crushes' "I have a feeling I won't get rid of you too easily, so might as well take you up on that offer. You got a phone?" She pulled out hers and held it out to you. You quickly typed in your number.

"Heh, well..." "Let's talk another time, I have somewhere to be and I'm sure the nice lady at the front desk would appreciate it, if we didn't converse in here." You nodded, and she turned around to buy the book. You watched as she waved to you and walked out the door.

"Huh"

. . . . .

The next time you crossed paths with Mai Zenin was on a rainy day in the middle of April. You were out on a grocery run, when the rain had started up again, and you didn't feel like driving back with the water droplets constantly limiting your field of view on the windshield; so you settled down for a small café at the end of the road.

After stepping inside the cozy little space, your eyes immediately found the mop of dark hair sitting in the far corner next to a window. You you ordered tea and a piece of cake, and then made your way towards her.

"Hello again" Mai looked up from here book, a slight smile settling on her face after realizing who just greeted her. "Hello, what a pleasant surprise to see you here" "May I?" You gestured to the seat across from her and she nodded.

You sat down and took a closer look at her. The turtleneck she was wearing looked spectacular on her, and her hair fell around her face perfectly. "What are you doing here?" Her voice brought you back to the present and you watched as she leaned her head to the side, a brow lifting on her face.

"Just figured I could drink some tea and wait for the rain to clear up" As if to prove your point, you took a sip from your warm drink. Mai nodded; "Me too. And I wanted to read after I finally got a day off" You gestured to the book in her hands, which you only now realized, was the book she bought the last time you saw her.

"Did you like it so far?" She nodded and took a sip from her coffee. "I like the female lead, she's very well written and reminds me of myself a lot" You perked up from stabbing your piece of cake with the fork you were provided with. "Really? Why is that?"

Mai chuckled "It's just... well first off all, she's realistic. Then there's her constant struggle of always fighting to be better than the male lead" She paused, took a deep breath and waved her hands around apologetically "But that's just one of many reasons why I like her. There's still plenty of other things she did that fascinated me." You hummed, looking outside the window, watching as cars moved through the rain.

"What about you? Who's your favorite character?" You looked back at Mai, to find her smiling at you. "I liked that one kid on the marketplace" "Huh?" You chuckled "He had a cactus. I like cacti, so obviously that's gotta be my number one"

"Oh..." She chuckled, then was silent for a bit, so you focused on eating the rest of you cake.

"I also like cacti" "Really? Awesome! Do you have one? I do!" She chuckled again, and shook her head. "Yes, I have plenty. It's kind of my hobby" You smiled and leaned forward.

"Woah really? We have a lot in common then. I mean, I wouldn't call it a hobby, but I definitely appreciate them" She hummed in agreement "We should hang out more" "Absolutely. On Friday, 3 P.M in front of the bookstore?"

She an amused smile formed on her face "What will we do there?" "I don't know, we'll figure something out" She laughed, and it sounded like music in your ears. 'I'm a goner'

"Alright then."

The rest of the evening went by fast. You talked about all kinds of things, and when both your cups were empty, you exited the café.

"See you Friday" Mai waved as she walked away from you, and you made your way to your car, a smile on your face. Even though you only seemed to run into her on days with horrible weather, Mai was someone you wanted to have as a friend in the future.

Maybe a bit more than that.
