Blue and yellow hues of wild sparks invisibly surged around the cafe, pointed arrow straight, coming at me. Thoughts precise, gravity halted, movement stood still and coldness filled the atmosphere. There was a power here, one I wasn't familiar with. Assessing the situation, clarity came into view with urgency. Letting down the walls around my mind, purposely touching each subconscious, I invaded, seeking the power source.
For this deep cover plan to succeed, I'd need to suck it up. Drawing all my willpower firmly together to do so. Hearing the judgments of others didn't make it easy to be civil. Remembering my uncle Wylliams' advice, "There is good and bad in everyone, but it's only a reflection of their character and you can't let it get to you, or it will undo you piece by piece." Suppressed the vile emotions brewing. Feelings aside, I could do this. I could fit in without issues. I could be hip, or at least die trying.
The source of the power hit me like shards of glass to the brain. Like a neon sign blinking, X marks the spot, I carefully snuck into three very intriguing minds. The three ladies' opinions drew me in, curiosity getting the best of me. The three of them mischievously plotting against the other; which was something that bewildered me. Lexi the so called, "Leader of the pack" envied the others for either their hair or their eyes or even their height; it was made worse by the fact that if all eyes weren't on her, she'd cut whoever down to get that spotlight back on her. It was amusing to see just how jealous women were of each other. A homeschool kid, I'd never been around enough females to witness this type of behavior, seeing it first hand perplexed me. Brianna wished she could leave so she could privately make a hair appointment to have her hair done more like mine, hoping Lexi would be more accepting and pleased with her. And Ever, well she was bubbly on the surface, but underneath something almost deadly was being hidden; interesting. She didn't like either girls but stuck with them to be a part of the sorority to impress her mother, but her intentions were challenging to read, so that's all I could determine about her. She was someone I could easily get to turn and become an ally of sorts if I so desired, by using her dislike for them to my advantage. As they made my table their own, I took my ear buds out. I had to show I was one of them.
With no imminent threat apparent, power snapped back into me, releasing the stillness. Carrying on as though nothing had occurred, Lexi asked me, "Are you new? I haven't seen you around before... and I would remember seeing you around with a look like yours." twisting her fingers through her hair absentmindedly. She didn't care what my answer was, personally she didn't prefer me, but I had the recognition the girls were scouting for and that would be enough. Her thoughts were also complex to interpret... like she forced up a wall to keep something out. Thoughts were there about the sorority and school, fashion and people she liked or didn't like, but past that, the barrier was an immovable boulder.
I nodded, then returned my attention to the book I had been pretending to study, trying to give the impression the conversation ended, while still exploring their minds for something I could find useful. With Ever, I kept hitting this mental block, which irritated me.
