Raph was in his room, watching a movie. He was on his bed with a bowl of extra buttered popcorn, watching a romance movie. He may be be a tough guy, but he also loves romantic comedies. He had to admit, they were sweet. And kinda cute.
The movie was about two boys who had just met at school, and they were falling in love. It was love at first sight. As Raph watched this, he scowled. "They literally just met and they already wanna kiss? How is that possible?" He sighed to himself.
Raph never understood how someone could fall in love with someone as soon as they met them. He guessed it was possible, but he never felt like that. What did that mean? Why was he so different?
"Is there....something wrong with me?" Raph mumbled to himself, feeling suddenly insecure. Donnie fell in love with April the moment he saw her. "I don't get it...I could never fall in love with someone I just met." He was confused as shell. Why did he...or didn't he, feel that way about romance?
Quickly, Raph pulled out his T-phone. He typed 'Why don't I fall in love with someone I just met?' into his Google search bar. Immediately, he was taken to a LGBTQ+ website. Raph's emerald eyed glowed with shell-shock.
"Wow..." He knew about the LGBTQ+ community, especially since Leo and Mikey had come out already. But as Raph scanned through the articles, he saw many terms that were all new to him. Polysexual? Pangender? Asexual? Neptunic?
"I'm pretty sure I'm straight, I think I only would like girls...boys and other genders are cool too but...I think I'd feel most attracted to a girl." Raph smiled a bit. He'd always been into girls, mostly.
But why didn't he feel attracted to them right away? To answer his question, Raph continued doing research. As he looked through one article, he stumbled upon a new word. It was in bold lettering.
Demiromantic.
Raph hummed to himself, reading the definition. Suddenly, it was like fireworks went off in his brain. This fit him perfectly. It was exactly how he felt. "Dang...so, I'm straight and demiromantic? Is that, like, normal? Can I be both?"
Raph continued reading and realized that anyone could identify as demiromantic. Straight people, grey-asexual people, androsexual people, and so on. So, it was normal. Raph smiled widely. He finally knew who he was.
And it felt right.
He knew what he wanted to do. And he spent a few days getting it ready. Finally, he was prepared. On a temporate Saturday afternoon, Raph invited April and Casey over and told Splinter, Leo, Donnie, Karai, and Mikey to come as well. They soon all arrived, curious and eager.
"What's going on, Raph?" Donnie asked as he entered. "You'll see, D." Raph smiled at him mysteriously. "Everyone wait here, I forgot something!" Raph hurried to his room. He came back wearing a rainbow jacket with black and white stripes on the sleeves. It was very soft.
He also had on a bandana with white, grey, green, black, and purple. "Oh, you gay too dude?" Mikey smiled excitedly as Raph laughed. "Nah, I'm not gay, but I am coming out ya all!" Raph was confident, excited.
"Sweet!" Karai grinned. They all smiled at him warmly. Raph smiled back. "So, I'm straight, which is why I have this rainbow, white, and black jacket." Raph explained, showing it off. He was the only straight person in the room.
"That's cool, man." Casey nodded happily. "Yeah, that's valid." April added reassuringly. Raph then showed them the bandana. "I'm also demiromantic, that means that I can't form a romantic relationship with anyone until I get to know them first." He smiled nervously.
"That is okay, Raphael." Splinter placed his paw on Raph's shoulder, sensing his second-oldest son's hesitation. "Thanks, dad." Raph smiled up at him. "You guys know how Leo came out as demisexual? Well, That's how I feel too. But, with romantic attraction instead."
Everyone agreed, chiming in and smiling. They all hugged Raph, patted him on the shell, and congratulated him on coming out. Coming out was never easy for anyone, no matter what it was. But Raph felt loved and accepted. He felt comfortable.
They all did.
"I'm actually demiromantic too!" April added. "Me too!" Casey fist-bumped both of them. Karai cheered at that. "Same!" Splinter smiled softly as well. "I also identify as demiromantic." Raph was surprised, but so happy! He never knew anyone who was demiromantic until now!
It was cool for him to actually know people who were his same sexuality. Mikey, Donnie, and Leo grinned brightly as they wrapped their arms around Raph. The emerald-eyed turtle hugged his brothers. Karai joined in, followed by Splinter, Casey, and April.
"As always, we accept you, bro!" Donnie smiled as Raph beamed. Everyone agreed happily. Raph chuckled and grinned. "Thanks guys, that's good to know. It's cool that a good number of us are actually demiromantic." He smiled warmly.
Raph was accepted, and he was glad he discovered his sexuality and understood himself now!
