I woke up to the blaring sound of my alarm clock, to which I lazily rolled over and slammed my hand down onto the snooze button.

"Elijah Mariano, you better have not hit that damn snooze button!" I hear my mom shout from downstairs but her words were almost- slurred? I figure that getting up now would be easier than having to face her in 5 minutes being half asleep, so I (regretfully) sit up and collect myself.

I'm Elijah Mariano. I'm 17, 6'3 and I would say I have a pretty good build, being  muscular but not to the point where it's gross. I don't consider myself a cliche jock. I don't do sports. Oh, but I am insanely popular. I don't mean to toot my own horn or whatever, but you could ask anyone and they would say I am the most popular guy.

I have girls constantly drooling over me, it's never hard to pull a bitch. I'm nice to almost everyone. As long as you don't have a problem with me, I don't have a problem with you. Which literally no one had a problem with me...right?
Anyways, I finally peel myself from my duvet, heading to the bathroom across my hall. I forgot to mention that I live in a literal mansion. 4 floors. Way too big when it's literally just me by myself, I hate it. Yes, by myself. My dad is constantly on "business trips" and my mom works ALL the time and if she isn't working, she is at the bar, completely forgetting my dad's infidelity.

So, on the outside everyone thinks I have the perfect life but in reality, nothing is perfect and no one knows.

I swiftly run my hands through my hair, to mess it up just right, before washing my face and brushing my teeth. I then return to my room where I throw on a baggy T-shirt, ripped jeans (chain included), a few rings, socks and some off-white converse. Going downstairs, I hear a bunch of clutter coming from the kitchen, and I can only assume that my mom is cooking me another half-assed breakfast before she leaves for 34 hours. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom but sometimes I wonder how much she loves me. As expected, my mom was throwing some toast and eggs onto a plate before grabbing her coat and purse.
She turned around to see me standing there, towering over her small frame. "Oh! You startled me. I am so sorry hun, but I have a long shift tonight... you know how it is, only 5 friends over at a time, no drugs, no alcohol, blah, blah, blah-" She chuckled a bit before her face became serious again. "Seriously Elijah, I am sorry that I work this much, you know I try. Anyways, you know all the rules. Love you hunny." She quickly pecked my cheek (I could smell alcohol on her breath, like seriously? It's 7:00 AM), then rushed out the door.

I didn't even get to say anything. Whatever, I am used to this shit by now.
I toss the plate of food into the trash, per usual and start walking to school. I pull out my airpods and click shuffle on my spotify playlist, in which "Iris", by The Googoo Dolls, starts playing. I softly lip sync the lyrics and begin my 15 minute walk to Evadale Highschool.

The walk to school was boring and I spent it as I usually do, listening to music and walking through nature. But, as soon as I reach the school grounds, it changes. My whole persona. I become the cool guy. Immediately I am greeted by my best friend, Adam. We have known each other my whole life. He is the only person who knows about my honest situation and he stands by me through it all.

"Ayoooo! EJ is in the house!" He cupped his hands over his mouth as he yelled obnoxiously. I shoved his side and laughed.

"Oh, shut it." We both come back to a calm stature as we walk into the school. His last name is Macer so our lockers are right next to each other every single year. We continued to talk about random stupid things, some other kids coming into and leaving the conversation as minutes pass, until class started.

Eventually, the bell did ring and we all parted ways to get to class. Upon entering my class however, there was some random kid sitting in the back row, his head turned down as he was invested in the book he was reading. I had never seen him before, but I thought nothing of it as we have class changes all the time. I sat two rows in front of him, before turning back to glance at him one more time just to see that he was near death-staring me. I quickly face towards the front of the classroom once again.

He had very light brown hair, which was styled into a near perfect middle part, and round reading glasses that fit his button nose perfectly. He had a small facial structure, and a small body for that matter, he was like 5'8 and he wore an oversized tan sweater with some light blue cuffed jeans.

Why did he look at me like that? Like he wanted me dead, but he didn't even know me? Whatever. He will probably get moved to a new class within a day.

As the day went on, I saw him around more and more, and each and every time, he shot a glare that was directed towards my literal soul. I wasn't sure why he didn't seem to like me, but I didn't really care enough to find out. I could see Adam making his way over to me in the halls, so I reciprocated and made my way over to him.

"Hey man, who the hell is that? He has been sending angry glares at me- like all day." I ask him, gesturing to the book boy.

"Oh, him? That's the new kid. Good luck with him dude, because from what I heard, he hates everyone."

And I don't know why, but the thought of him hating me bothered the fuck out of me.
