4.
Today, Leo had the house to herself; Ben and Lisa were at the park. Naturally she took this time to research what was happening. She scoured the Internet for anything relevant.
She had found a few articles on Changelings. They were basically children who were taken and replaced with identical copies which fed off their mothers. The only way to kill them was fire.
After reading her sixth article on the creatures, Leo decided to give Dean a call, albeit reluctantly. She knew that she wouldn't be able to do anything after being freshly risen from hell.
Slowly, Leodora typed in the phone number and pressed call. She let it ring a few times, she missed working, but she'd only worked with one person. Paige.
Finally, the line was picked up.
"Who's this?" A gruff voice asked.
"Leo. Stop with the deep voice, I know your voice is like a prepubescent boy's," She teased, knowing full well that his voice was indeed that deep. It'd hurt his ego, level him a bit.
"Oh, it's you. I take it you found something?" Dean spoke into the phone.
"Who's that?" A new voice asked.
"Oh, is that the other Winchester? What a pleasure. I'm Leo."
"We seemed to have picked up on another hunter's case, Sam."
"Oh, so we can go then?" The second Winchester asked.
"No. She has no partner."
"I'm perfectly fine on my own, I just figured you'd guys like to know what it is," Leo ran fingers through her hair. She had originally planned to take a break until she found Paige, but now, Leodora wasn't so sure. Endangering the people who took her in wasn't something she wanted to do. And, well, bad things happened to follow her.
"Anyway, something is wrong with the kids," Leo spoke into the phone.
"Tell me about it..." Sam murmured, he seemed distracted by something.
"What do you know about changelings?" Leodora asked the pair.
"Evil monster babies?" Dean asked, Leo could picture him looking over at his brother.
"No, not necessarily babies," Sam told Dean, waiting for Leo to continue.
"The kids. Creepy, "stare at you like you're my lunch" kids?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, there's one in that woman's house. The one Lisa was talking to yesterday."
"There's one in each of the victim's houses," Sam told Dean. So they had been investigating.
"I say we go tonight, I've got an idea of where they're hiding," Leo said finally.
"We?"
"Obviously. Ben's at risk and Lisa trusts me most. Speak of the devil, I gotta go. See you tonight at 9. Don't be late," Leo said before hanging up the phone, leaving them no choice but to come.
Lisa opened the door as Leodora hastily placed the phone back on the receiver. "Hey Lisa! What's wrong?" She asked, as she noticed Lisa's face was flushed red.
"Ben kicked some kid in the nads!" She huffed and went to her room.
Leo turned to Ben with an eyebrow raised.
"What? He took my game! Dean told me to, anyway!" Ben defended himself before storming off to his own room.
"Ah. Well, so much for having lunch made for me," Leo sighed before heading to the guest room to prepare for the night to come.
~~~~~~
It was exactly nine o'clock and neither of the boys had shown up. Leodora was pacing angrily. She knew that she couldn't take on a mother changeling on her own.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Leo opened her own door, but Lisa got to the front door first.
"Dean?"
"I was thinking...Ben's birthday. I didn't bring him a present."
"That's okay," Lisa shrugged, Leo furrowed her eyebrows. Surely, this wasn't his idea of sneaking her out. Lisa turned Dean away and he reluctantly left. Leo raised an eyebrow.
Quickly, she went back to her room and opened the window, expertly sliding out and landing just outside the house. It was a good thing she was staying on the first floor.
Leo ran around the front to confront Dean. "What are you doing?" She asked as she reached his car.
"I need you to stay with Lisa. They took Ben. Please," Dean commanded her, she nodded slowly. "Where do you think they are?"
"Uh, there's a building under construction still. Most probable place," Leodora reluctantly told him and backed away from the car, waving as he drove off. She climbed back through her window and kicked her boots off. What was the point if she wasn't going anywhere?
It took her a moment to register what Dean had said. They took Ben. They took Ben. That meant that the Ben Lisa was talking to in the living room, was not Ben.
Leo flung open her door and rushed down the hallway long enough to see Lisa run outside. She was surrounded by creepy little children. "Lisa! Come on!" Leodora shouted, grabbing her arm.
"Quick, do you have a lighter?" Leo asked, running into the kitchen.
"Why do you need a lighter?!"
"It's the only way to kill them!"
"Wait. Do you hear that?" Lisa held her arm out in front of Leo to hold her back.
"No. What is it?" She asked quietly, straining to listen. But there was nothing.
"They're gone," Lisa said finally.
The two sat on the couch, Lisa was nursing a coffee that might have been half scotch while she waited for Dean and Ben to show up.
Finally, the front door swung open and Ben ran through it. Lisa hugged Ben tightly, "Ben?! Ben! Baby, are you okay?!"
"I'm okay, mom," Ben assured her.
"What the hell just happened?" Lisa looked to Dean for an answer. It was then Leodora made her decision. She went back to the guest room and began packing up her stuff.
She waited until the Winchesters had left and Lisa and Ben were asleep. Leo pulled her backpack onto her shoulders and left a wad of cash on the freshly made bed. She crept through the house and silently out the front door.
Bad things happened to her, that's why she was so good with Paige, because it happened to both of them. And there was that whole destiny thing. She'd prefer not to think about it though.
Leo walked down the road, silently looking for her next adventure.
