A small mud pathway lead up to the stone veranda of the house. Ugly beast like creatures scrutinized the young girl as her head peaked up from looking at the ground.
"This is our new house?" She whispered confused to her parents that now joined her by her sides.Miranda, Stephanie's mother strangely gazed at her daughter unsure what her emotions were reading.
Miranda was a pale women of average height, whose wrinkles gave her an almost scary effect when she smiled, but when wearing her loubotin heals she loomed over her husband, Gregory.
"Why are you WHISPERING dear?" Her mother screamed, although this was her indoor voice.
The sound caused Stephanie to search around the forest that surrounded there new house to see if anyone had heard, or anything. To her surprise flocks of birds dispersed from there nests, not that she blamed them of course.
There were times when Stephanie just wanted to disappear from her parents when seen with them at school, times when she just wished that voice could be blocked out from her head. That voice. At parents evening at school the annoying wails of,
"STEPHHYYY... BAbaYY!!!"
would echo through the halls of her school, not to mention the wave of eyes that would dart towards her, and the months of teases afterwards. But stephy learnt to keep her friendship circle small, just including the people that were really dedicated.
"Come on stephy hunny, don't you want to have a look inside?" Her dad said quietly and gently compared to her mum.
She suddenly snapped out of her thoughts and turned around to see her dad leaning against the doorway.
Not bothered to examine the fine features of the exterior of the house she tracked up the veranda stairs to find the door wide open.
A draft of wind caught her ear, almost as if the whistling gusts were trying to communicate but then.... she heard it. A branch. Footsteps.
'Theres something there' she thought to herself. 'Go inside you fool, No No turn around turn around and see'
the voices in her head confused her but without thinking she found herself facing the trees and No longer the door of safety.
