She never noticed how much she hated silence. It wasn't a new thing to her, by all means, she remembers always laying on her bed as child, waiting for time to pass by. But now, years later, she's gotten used to always having someone around. Persephone realised the longer you spend sitting in silence, the more you notice how deafening it becomes.
She would always dread having to go back home for the holidays. she used to have something to look forward too. Her brother, Icarus. They were best friends growing up, her only friend.
He had dreams. Just like Persephone. To get out and end the bloodline. Do something of his own, without their parents yelling at him for every minor mistake.
Persephone hasn't seen him in three years. Her parents had told her that he was killed for doing something reckless, and some people said he had just simply left. But Persephone knew her brother better than anyone. He wasn't like that. And he sure as hell wouldn't leave without saying a word.
She paced apprehensively around the room. Did I forget something?
Her mother barged into her room this morning, without announcing herself, or any explanation. She ordered the house elves to help her get ready. They put her in this elegant, grey-ish gown. She paced back and forth waiting for her mum to come back into the room.
"Mother-"
"Not now. We still have so much to do, and not enough time." Her mother was always a well put together woman. Everything always had to go her way. Persephone admired her for that.
"Yes, I'm sorry, I know, but-"
She turned around, sharply, glaring at her.
"Do not disrespect me young lady. It won't end well for you.""Yes mother." she said, dropping her head trying to avoid eye contact.
"Very well." She nodded, walking closer to her daughter.
She bought her finger up to Persephone's chin, lifting her head up. "Keep your head up today, Persephone. And don't speak unless spoken to.""Yes, mother."
She nodded, again. "I except you downstairs in five minutes."
she watched as she left the room, closing the door behind her. As soon as Persephone saw she was gone, she bought her hands up to her face, letting out a shaky breath.
Not now. Not here.
Breathe.
In. Out.
In. Out.
In... out.
She brushed her hand through her hair, and shook the funny feeling off, reaching for the doorknob. She hesitated for a slight moment but knew there was nothing that could be done do to get out of this.
Persephone walked into the room to find around two dozen people waiting for... her? she looked around the room, confused, trying to find her mum.
"Ah, Persephone, how nice of you to finally join us." She said giving her a small, rare smile. It was all a show, this.
She smiled back, trying to be polite. Everyone had split off into groups, glasses of champagne in their hands.
She walked to one of the empty tables in the room and sat down. This is weird. Really weird.
Persephone put her hands in her lap, messing with them."Miss Fortis?" She looked up, interrupted from her thoughts, to find Walburga and Orion Black standing in front of her.
She could feel heart starting to race faster than it should, "I'm sorry Mrs. Black." She stood up, apologetically, offering a handshake.
She beamed, shaking the young girl's hand. "Special day, isn't it?"
Persephone raised her eyebrows, still confused as to what today is, "Oh, yes." she lied.
"Why don't you and Regulus get acquainted with each other?" Orion spoke up, gesturing to his son, who stood next to him.
He was dressed in all black from head to toe. You could see the obvious similarities between him and Sirius. But Regulus looked more graceful. His hair was neater, and his curls defined his face in all the right places, his jawline was sharper and his eyes darker.
Persephone looked at Regulus and back to Orion, "Of course, Mr. black."
He smiled back at her, before walking away with his wife, leaving her and Regulus alone.
They stood there in awkward silence, not daring to make eye contact. She picked up the glass of champagne that she was previously holding and drank almost all of it in one go.
Regulus finally looked up, breaking the silence.
"Aren't you too young to be drinking?" He asked, bluntly.Persephone shrugged putting the glass back down, "What's life without a little bit of risk?" she sneered, jokingly.
He looked at her, not even the slightest of emotion showing in his eyes. "That's not very lady-like."
She couldn't help but snigger at that. "Who are you to tell me that?"
Regulus furrowed his eyebrows, "Your future husband?"
Her smile dropped, and she could feel her heart in her chest. "What?" she asked nervously.
Regulus looked confused, "You parents didn't tell you?"
"What- no!"
Regulus looked at her with the slightest hint of remorse in his eyes.
"I'm sorry, Black, but I have to go talk to my mother." said the shaken-up girl, walking away, trying to find her parents.
