Persephone chewed on her bottom lip, and she could feel her heart starting to beat faster. As the door shut behind her, it made a loud bang causing her to flinch. Persephone stood there, in front of the door, unable to move. The younger boy turned around, and Persephone realised she was right. It was Regulus. He looked at her and they held eye contact for a few seconds. Persephone could feel herself starting to sweat and her mouth going dry.
She wouldn't normally feel like this. Just a couple of weeks ago Persephone would see Regulus as Sirius' younger brother, and nothing more. But now every time she saw him it was like the ground was about to swallow her whole.
It felt as if her feet were stuck to the ground, and everything was frozen in place. Persephone shut her eyes for a split second, breaking the eye contact, she let out a shaky breath and just as she was about to leave the room, the door was swung open.
"Oh! I didn't except anyone to be here yet," the woman said enthusiastically. She looked younger than Persephone had imagined.
Professor Varma was an Indian witch with clear brown skin, long dark hair, and big black eyes.
"Sit down then, you two," she smiled at them and walked to the front of the classroom to get herself set up.
In that moment it hit Persephone. Why was he even in this class?
Regulus was sitting in the front row, which was where Persephone was normally sat. She hesitated for a second, but then realised that she wasn't going to let him ruin this class for her. She went over to sit down on the front row, but still choosing the furthest seat away from Regulus.
"Well, we've still got 10 minutes before the lesson starts, why don't we get to know each other, Hm?"
Their professor suggested as she sat down on top of her desk. There was an awkward silence, neither of them very keen to say anything, Professor Varma realised this and chuckled, "I'm Professor Varma, I'll be teaching you for the rest of the year. What's your name, darling?" She asked, looking at Persephone.
"Persephone. Persephone Fortis." She gave her a small smile trying to be polite.
"Wonderful, and how about you?"
"Regulus Black."
"Ah you're the fifth year? Professor Dumbledore told me about you," she started, "I except great things from you."
Persephone clenched her jaw in annoyance. She was supposed to be top of her class. Not Regulus.
The lesson seemed to drag on for forever. Persephone was glad to hear when it was finally over. She waited for everyone else to pack up and leave before she did.
The whole day was quite hectic, with no time to see any of her friends. But it was finally time for dinner. However, things seemed to be a bit odd between all of her friends. Especially Sirius and Remus. It was the only the first week back and they've already managed to get themselves into an argument. Persephone made a mental note to be sure to ask Remus what was wrong.
"You have no idea how much I missed you guys today," Persephone sighed melodramatically.
"Obviously, why wouldn't you." Sirius said jokingly, winking at her.
Persephone gave him a look. "Oh sorry, I meant, everyone but you."
"Ha ha." Sirius laughed sarcastically.
Persephone chuckled sitting down beside Remus.
"Anything happen today Sephie?" Remus asked, mumbling through his food.
She looked at him hesitantly. She knew she would have to tell her friends about her engagement soon. Right know just wasn't the right time, but then again, there won't ever be a right time for this
"Nope, not specifically. Just boring." She replied rubbing her eyes from tiredness.
The hall was filled with laughter and chatter from all of the other students. James and Sirius were arguing over their favourite quidditch teams, Peter had met a girl from Ravenclaw last year and since they haven't seen each other all summer, he promised he would spend the rest of the day with her.
Persephone sat there quietly; her plate still clean. She was lost in thought, therefore not paying attention to anyone. Her arms were crossed across her chest and her head was lowered.
Out of nowhere Remus had put his hands on Persephone's leg causing her to wake up from her thoughts. She had been bouncing her leg for a while, without realising. She looked at Remus's hand on her leg without looking up at him, trying to avoid eye contact. "Sorry," She muttered under her breath.
"For what, Sephie? No need to apologise" His voice was low, but Persephone could still pick out the worried tone.
She shook her head, looking up at him. He pursed his lips together, forcing a small smile, "Are you Alright?"
"I'm fine moony, just tired."
"You should eat," he said, looking at her empty plate, and back at her.
She sighed, pausing for a second, and lowering her gaze back down. "I'm not hungry, Remus."
"Sephie you can talk to me, you know that, yeah?"
Remus told her, concerned."I'm fine. Remus. There's nothing to tell." Persephone said harshly, raising her voice slightly.
She stood up from her sport, leaving the great hall, not wanting to talk about this anymore.
Remus sighed, pinching his nose.James and Sirius seemed to notice something had happened, but before either of them could say anything, Remus made the decision to get up and follow his friend out.
