Chapter Three
Diana Barry and Anne Shirley started to walk to the schoolhouse one Monday morning as Anne looked at the sights around her. Her hair was shorter than she thought, but at least she still had hair for that matter.
"Oh, Diana!" Anne cried, twirling around on her heel. "Everyone will be talking about my hair. I really hope Gilbert doesn't tell anyone about my previous green hair; it'll be just dreadful. He won't, will he? It would be pretty wicked to tell everyone about my wicked act; it was wicked of me to dye it. Josie Pye will definitely be talking about my short hair, probably saying it's as red as ever. I just have to stay positive! Oh, look at that tree. It's wonderful! Look at the blooms, don't you love spring? Spring is my favorite season. All the flowers just come out and it's simply beautiful. I love how apple trees get blooms before the real apples come, don't you, Diana?"
"Josie is a Pye; she always finds something to say about people," Diana laughed. "Although, Anne, I like your hair."
Anne dreamily looked at Diana. "Thank you, Diana. I really never liked my hair; no matter how short it really is."
Anne and Diana reached the schoolhouse just in time, for Anne had stopped to pick a few flowers, but had to put them down because she could not take them into the schoolhouse.
Josie Pye was the first to notice Anne's short hair, and she quickly made a comment.
"Your hair is as red as ever, Anne. Why'd you cut it?"
Anne felt the anger soar into her cheeks.
"I merely wanted to, Josie. I am terribly sorry that you do not like it; but what's done is done."
Anne stuck her nose up in the air, linking arms with Diana. "Come on, Diana."
The two girls started walking again as they walked inside the schoolhouse. Anne, taking her seat beside Diana, noticed Gilbert Blythe staring at her with interested eyes. Giving Anne a wink that said 'your green hair secret is safe with me,' Gilbert focused his eyes on Mr. Phillips.
Anne stared into space momentarily, thinking about the Lake of Shining Waters. Barry's Pond was simply just too plain for Anne's taste; so she changed the lakes name. She did that a lot.
"I think Gilbert wants to walk you home," Diana whispered to Anne, glancing toward Gilbert's direction. Gilbert was waiting by the schoolhouse with his hands in his pockets, staring at Anne Shirley.
"I always walk home with you, Diana! Why would I let Gilbert Blythe walk me home when I barely know him?" Anne questioned with a swift shake of her head.
"You should let him walk you home, Anne. He really wants to," Diana said and simply smiled. "Besides, I wouldn't mind walking home alone. What do you think I did before you came to Avonlea?"
Anne thought for a moment and soon crossed her arms. Her gray-green eyes looked over at Gilbert, who was merely whistling a tune to himself, and she nodded solemnly. "I suppose I will let him walk me home, but just this once. What harm could it do?"
Diana simply nodded and walked off.
Anne, with crossed arms, walked over to Gilbert. Gilbert, who was leaning against the schoolhouse, stood up straight and eyed Anne. He stopped whistling his small little tune and smiled.
"Diana told me you wanted to walk me home," Anne said and uncrossed her arms right after she said her statement. "I am giving you the right to walk me home, Gilbert Blythe, and I think it was real nice of you not to tell anyone about my green hair secret."
"I wouldn't tell anyone about that, carrots," Gilbert said with a small wink. "I like your hair auburn anyways."
"Oh!" Anne said dreamily, staring up into his hazel eyes. "You really think my hair is auburn, and not red? That's one of the nicest things anyone's ever said to me, other then Marilla telling me I could stay at Green Gables. My hair is red; and I never believed it to be auburn. Do you really think it's auburn?"
Gilbert blinked, seeing her staring into his hazel orbs. Gilbert stared back into her gray-green eyes and winked. "Yes, Anne Shirley, it's auburn. Not carrot colored. Or cabbage colored."
"When my hair grows back, I hope it's a dark auburn. I know my hair is red, I can't imagine that away, but it is real nice of you to say that it is auburn. I believe you, I do, it's real wicked for someone to call someone else a liar, don't you think?" Anne asked and looked forward again, walking with Gilbert.
Gilbert listened to every word Anne said and enjoyed listening to her beautiful voice.
"Oh, I guess we've reached Green Gables," Anne said, her cheeks turning to a crimson as she blushed. "I did not think I would enjoy this walk, but I did. It was real thoughtful of you to walk me home, Gilbert Blythe. We should do it again sometime."
Anne turned and walked toward the door of Green Gables, but she turned her head to see Gilbert giving her one last wink before he walked off.
"I dare you to walk the ridgepole of Mr. Barry's house!" Josie Pye challenged Anne, crossing her arms with her nose up in the air.
Diana gasped as Gilbert gaped at Josie.
"Anne!" Diana cried. "You mustn't do it. What if you fall?"
"Diana, my honor is at stake. I must do it. I shall walk that ridgepole, Diana, or perish in the attempt," Anne said simply, grabbing Diana's arm. "Diana, if I die, please remember that I love you and I hope you will remember me. If I die, live your life and never forget me, Di."
Yes, Anne Shirley was being a bit dramatic about this, but she was going to walk that ridgepole.
"Anne!" Gilbert shouted, grabbing her arm before she could climb up. "Anne, don't do it. I don't want you getting hurt."
Gilbert looked into Anne's gray-green eyes. His hazel orbs had a look of plead in them that said 'Anne, please don't do it. You'll get hurt.'
"I must do it," Anne finally decided, climbing up onto the roof. Gilbert broke his gaze with Anne's eyes, but he watched her intently.
Anne climbed up onto the ridgepole with no problems whatsoever. Josie Pye stared up at her with crossed arms and a look in her eyes that read 'you can't do it!'
Anne held her arms out for balance, but Gilbert saw her concentration and balance start to fade away. Anne swayed a bit as Gilbert ran to the other side of Mr. Barry's house.
"Ah!" Anne screamed, losing her balance completely.
Anne went tumbling down Mr. Barry's roof as Gilbert Blythe lunged forward, catching Anne in his arms.
Diana gasped as everyone ran to the side of the house where Anne fell. Diana found Anne clinging onto Gilbert with her arms around his neck.
Anne breathed in and out, staring up into Gilbert's hazel orbs. "You saved me from dying!" Anne exclaimed dramatically. "Thank...Thank you, Gilbert!"
