Chapter Five
"Anne is in her room," Marilla Cuthbert said to Gilbert, who was on the doorstep of Green Gables.
"Alright, Miss Cuthbert," Gilbert replied meekly, trudging back to Anne's room. He found the door open, and Anne was staring out the window.
"Hey, carrots!" Gilbert yelled with a laugh; just to get her attention.
Anne's head immediately turned in Gilbert's direction. "You know how I feel about my hair, Gilbert Blythe."
"Right, sorry," Gilbert said with his infamous wink. "I'm guessing from the last time I visited your ankle is fine now?"
"Yes," Anne said and stood up. "Thank you. Um...how...are you?"
Anne said it rather awkwardly, pausing in between two or three words. She stared into Gilbert's handsome hazel eyes as she instantly broke contact when he replied. "I'm...good. And, uh, you?"
"Good," Anne said with a nod. Gilbert merely nodded, shifting his cap around on his head awkwardly.
"How is the new teacher, Miss Stacy? Is she rather nice? It would be wicked to say that anyone is mean-" Anne was cut off by Gilbert giving her a look. "Oh, is she nice, though? I asked Diana, but all she said was she was nice. She's coming over for tea soon, you know. Is that true? Oh, is it?"
Gilbert merely laughed. "She's great, you know. You'll like Miss Stacy, just trust me, Anne."
"I always trust you," Anne said with a blush and a smile. "I trusted you to pull me out of that well."
Gilbert smiled. "I should probably be going. You said Marilla allowed you to invite Diana over for tea, and I would not want to intrude."
"I'll see you soon, then," Anne said and smiled.
Anne was about to walk out of her room when she tripped over a rusty nail that was popping out of the floorboards. Anne, with a shriek, fell forward.
Anne braced herself for the fall, but it never came. She opened her eyes, only now knowing that they were closed, and she found herself safely in Gilbert's arms.
"I saved you from falling again, carrots," Gilbert said with his sneaky wink.
Anne laughed and found herself blushing crimson. "Thank you."
"No problem," Gilbert said with a sneaky-sounding chuckle. "I should be going."
"Right, right," Anne said, as Gilbert let her out of his arms.
Anne found herself staring into his handsome hazel orbs once again. She always found a way to stare into them; and this time Gilbert stared back into her gray-green orbs.
Gilbert kissed her cheek rather quickly, and with a cheeky grin, was out of Green Gables in a flash.
Anne blushed to herself, her cheeks a hot crimson red. Her dress swayed a bit, and she walked out of her room with her hands neatly folded in front of her.
"Gilbert Blythe left in a hurry," Marilla commented, placing her hat on her head. "Diana is here, Anne. I will be back soon. Please, don't do anything rather stupid."
"I'll try not to," Anne said, as Diana padded in. "I'll try my best-I don't try to be clumsy, I just am sometimes. I will see you soon, Marilla!"
Marilla nodded and walked out as Diana walked up next to Anne.
"Hello, Diana," Anne said politely, acting older than she really is. "Let me have your hat and coat!"
Diana Barry gave Anne her hat and coat, leaving her gloves on for the moment.
