Chapter Eight
"Oh, Anne!" Diana Barry sighed dreamily. "I guess it's time for us to enter the dance. I cannot wait to see you dance with Gilbert..."
Anne sighed at Diana's words, but she smiled and emitted a light chuckle. "Who says he will even want to dance with me, just simple little Anne Shirley?"
Diana narrowed her eyes at the redhead, crossing her arms, sticking her nose up in the air sarcastically. "Of course he'll dance with you, Anne. I will be very angry if he does not!"
Anne simply continued smiling, taking Diana's hand, walking into the room. To no surprise, Anne's eyes scanned the room to look for Gilbert. She didn't see him anywhere at the moment, but she knew she'd see him eventually.
Anne, Diana's hand still in hers, walked into the room fully. Her eyes looked around at everyone, and a smile crept along Diana's face too.
"Oh!" Anne sighed dreamily as if in one of her daydreams. "Isn't the room beautiful? I simply love it! What are your thoughts, Diana?"
"It's very beautiful," replied Diana with a nod of her head. "Are you not going to go find Gilbert?"
"I did not see him when I walked in," Anne stated, a frown creeping along her face. "Did you?"
Diana shook her head, looking at Anne. "No, but you should still go look! I'll be right beside you, Anne."
Anne nodded her head, her frown turning upside down. The redhead grabbed Diana's hand more firmly, dragging her behind her throughout the room.
Finally, Anne saw the one and only Gilbert Blythe. She practically skipped over, Diana having to be dragged by her best friend.
Gilbert turned around, and Anne's beauty caught his eye. A smile appeared on his face as Anne reached him with a smile.
"Ah, there you are!" Gilbert politely said, watching as Anne let go of Diana's hand. "I was looking for you two. You two look very beautiful."
"Thank you," replied Diana, nudging Anne as if to say 'dance with him!"
"And you look very handsome," Anne politely replied with a swift nod of her head. Gilbert simply nodded, smiling a bright smile that Anne loved.
"Well," Diana said, clasping her hands together, "I will leave you two alone."
Without another word, Diana turned and walked off before Anne could say 'wait!'
"Well, carrots," Gilbert used that nickname he had used on Anne, resulting in him getting thwacked in the head with Anne's slate, "how many dances would you like?"
Anne pursed her lips, staring up at him. "Who ever said that I wanted a dance with you, Mr. Blythe?"
In fact, and everyone knew it, that was a lie. Anne did want a dance with the handsome Gilbert Blythe, whether she wanted to admit it or not. Gilbert knew it too, and Anne knew that.
"Ah," Gilbert said, taking Anne's hand, "carrots, may I see your dance card?"
"Stop calling me carrots, or I will find another slate, Mr. Blythe," Anne snapped, but it wasn't really seriously. Anne liked how Gilbert called her carrots.
Gilbert gave Anne puppy eyes, and it was quite adorable to the redhead. The puppy eyes could melt someone's heart, and they were certainly melting Anne's. Anne smiled at him, handing him her dance card, "Only a few, Gil."
Anne watched as Gilbert put his name down on the card, and he soon handed it back to her. Anne's eyed seemed to pop out of their sockets when she read the card.
"I said a few!" exclaimed Anne with a huff. "Not six! I was expecting three!"
"Well, if you were expecting three, now you have double the fun!" replied Gilbert, a cheeky smile playing on his lips.
"Who said I would have fun?" asked Anne, a smile appearing on her lips for the millionth time in one night. "I think dancing with you would get old after three dances, don't you think?"
"I cannot dance with myself, so I wouldn't know, carrots," Gilbert said with a wink, grabbing Anne's hands in his. "Dance with me, Anne Shirley?"
"Well," giggled Anne, "your name is already down six times, so I cannot say no, can I?"
"You can say no," laughed Gilbert, "but you won't."
"That is very true, Mr. Blythe."
Gilbert and Anne began to dance, and Anne could feel Diana's gaze directly on them both. Anne's heart seemed to melt while staring up into Gilbert's handsome eyes. A spark seemed to seep through her body, and she hoped Gilbert felt that spark too. Gilbert smiled down at her while moving swiftly, dancing.
Anne smiled back, getting closer to Gilbert after each step they took. She couldn't even tell if Gilbert was pulling her closer, or if she was just doing that herself. Either way, the two were only inches apart.
"We have five more dances to go after this, carrots," Gilbert said, pulling Anne even closer. "Remember when you had green hair and I called you cabbage?"
"Oh," groaned Anne with a small chuckle, "never speak of that. That was merely dreadful."
Gilbert smiled even more, and Anne smiled at the memory. It was absolutely dreadful! She had to have her hair cut! She never said that she liked her hair, but she never wanted it cut!
Anne continued to stare into Gilbert's eyes, and with a smile, Gilbert began to pull her even closer.
