I woke up a little earlier than I expected. We're moving into the dorm house today, so I needed to do some last minute packing. Nah, I haven't even started.
I go downstairs for a quick bite. I really haven't eaten breakfast with my dad since I was transported over to the navy base in Hawaii. So it was a nice change.
He sat downstairs, drinking small sips of lukewarm coffee periodically, so he doesn't hurt his throat more.
"Morning dad"
"Good morning Speedy, sleep well?" He asked
"Yeah, I slept pretty average, but I'm pretty exited for training today. Uncle Mav said that he was gonna be teaching all of us all, and he got thrown out of the bar by some of his new students last night."
My dad let out a small laugh, and hearing him genuinely happy made my heart smile.
"Classic Maverick. Tell me what everyone does when they see him"
"I definitely will." I say as I finish my meal, and he finishes his coffee. As I head out the door I hear a small "Love you." I immediately run back to give him one last hug before I'm gone for three weeks.
"I'll text you everyday, and I'll visit when I can. I promise."
" I know you will. Kazansky's don't break their promises."
"I love you."
"I love you too, now go give them hell Lexi."
With that I was out the door. I couldn't let him see how much leaving him hurt me.
As I got in my car, I thought about how everyone would react, shock? Embarrassment? Both? Probably both honestly.
As I pull up to the base, I see Phoenix and go over to talk to her.
"Hey Nat!" I use her real name since we have been stationed together forever and we're basically best friends.
"Hey Lexa!" She says, using my nickname that she coined. She identified let anyone else use it because of "Natasha style copyright"
We both start to head inside and as we walk in, I hear someone yell out at us
"Hey! I thought I was going to Top Gun, why are there Girl Scouts?"

Of course it was him. I only needed to hear his little speech at the bar last night to know he's definitely cocky and stuck up. And boy was I right.
As I turn around, I see pure shock on his face. His reaction was priceless, I wish I had it on video.
"Hey Bagman, miss me?" I reply coolly, trying not to laugh out loud.
"Well well....if it isn't the girl from the bar. I never caught your name.
"I'm Rouge, you'll find out my name if you deserve to."
"Well then-"
He gets cut off mid sentence and we all get called to attention. Admiral Bates tells all of us to be seated, and of course I get stuck sitting next to Hangman because Phoenix was sitting with her WSO. I think his callsign was Bob.
As we all are seated, Admiral Bates starts talking about the mission, and how half of us will make the cut. Basic boilerplate stuff. My attention gets caught when he mentions who our teacher is, and how he has received many titles, awards, and how he has real life experience. I look around to see everyone smiling with anticipation to see who this mystery man is, but I already know, and I also know shit is about to go down.
"Please welcome Pete Mitchell, call sign "MAVERICK" Bates announced.
I look behind me and give a little wave as he walks up the aisle of desks, of course he waved back.
As I look around, I genuinely smile at everyone's reactions. Scared, annoyed, embarrassed, and hangman's reaction. Once he saw Mav, all he could do was pinch the bridge of his nose and sigh. I elbowed him and gave him a cocky side grin, as if announcing a victory. He just gave a "the look" back.

The first thing Mav did was ask us about the F-18 manual that we were all required to memorize, and as soon as he asked, most of the guys confirmed his question
"Hell yeah"
"Damn right"
"Damn straight"
After getting a look around at the room, Mav just simply dropped it into the trash can, shocking everyone, even his kind-of-bosses. Everyone just gave him either a blank stare, a questionable look, or jumped back.
*this is gonna be interesting* I think to myself with a small grin.
"You know this manual, but so does your Enemy, but what they don't know is your limits, and I'm here to test them and push them further than they have ever gone. I want you to show me what you can do."
And with that, we were all headed to the change rooms to suit up for flight.
As I walked into the change room, so did Hangman.
"So you think you're gonna beat me? Because you're not." He says from behind me, in almost a defensive tone.
I look back at him, and back him up into the lockers
"Hey Hangman, I think you need an ego check."
I look at the toothpick between his teeth, and I subconsciously snatch it out of his mouth and put it in mine
"Because I'm gonna beat your ass today."
And with that I leave to get my flight suit.
