It's Hard to be Lee

16. Cover Girl

Lee was exhausted after her vacation, and she needed another vacation to rest from the first one. As soon as she got home, in two days, she had to be back in school. She was going to slow down her work schedule and be very selective. She was not a struggling model anymore; she had made it. She was in the big leagues now.

She was going to grace the cover of Teen magazine. It shocked her when her agent called her with the news.

"The shoot in South Beach went excellent and along with the interview they have a full cover story," her agent told her. "Oh yeah, they want to get some shots of you at school. You know, a day in the life of a teenage model type of thing."

"No way! I won't have photographers following me around school!"

"Come on Lee. Just one photographer, a few shots. Maybe after school activities."

"Okay, sure."

She got off the phone and squealed. Cover girl. She was going to be on the cover of a magazine.

Lee wanted the photographer to be as inconspicuous as possible, but the actors in the play knew something was going on.

"Who's that guy taking all the pictures of you?" Tereya Woods, her co-lead asked her.

"Umm...huh?" Lee played dumb.

"Un-nnn, don't play dumb with me girlfriend! Is it something with your modeling?" Tereya asked.

"T, please, just keep quiet about it. I don't want everyone to know," Lee said.

Tereya grinned. "Who I got to tell?"

Lee always thought Tereya was cool. Tereya did not care what others thought of her and was always doing her own thing. Before the play, Lee would have never spoken to her because she was a sophomore from "the other side" of town and considered too wild to control. She did not have any friends, but Lee thought she was cool.

"Yo Lee, what are you up to? You have your own photographer following you?" Joe asked her when they were done with rehearsals.

"No, Just some story they are doing."

"On you?"

"Yes me."

"Which magazine is it?"

"Joe! I really don't want everyone to know. Let's keep this in the low-low."

"Sure, But make sure he gets a few shots with me in them. I want to blow up too."

Her issue of Teen magazine came out quickly. Lee walked into school one day and saw the cover plastered all over the walls down the hall. She did not look like herself she looked ten times better. Her hair was straightened, with a pat to one side, and her hair fell over one shoulder. Her mother put a few blonde highlights in her hair, and it turned out great. She wore a yellow tank top and black pants.

Girls and guys were reading all about her. None of them bothered her for autographs though. Lee thought that was strange. She knew something was up.

"Da dum da dum!" Joe bellowed m marching over to Lee with Mark beside him. He held a handmade crown made of aluminum foil.

"Lee is the honorary queen of Larkin High, for she put us on the map and made us all look good, "Mark shouted out to everyone near, as her cheeks flushed red.

Some people stopped and cheered.

"Yes, and check me out on page fifty-seven. I look good," Joe said.

"You guys!"

"Girl, you are the wo-man! Why didn't you tell me you were going to be on the cover? I thought we were cool like that?"

"Yeah, I'm hurt Lee," Mark added in.

"Sorry. I told Joe I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but when has he ever listened to me?" She pushed Joe.

"All the time, homie." Joe lifted the crown to her head. "Here." He placed it on her head. "Lee the Queen."          

"I'm not wearing this thing!"

"You have to. All day. You're the queen for the day," Mark said. "Come on your highness, let's get to class."

Lee knew from that minute on, she would never be a regular student ever again. Not just Lee Anderson, but Lee the supermodel. And Larkin High would never be the same either.
