(quick note, this story takes place a year before sodapop actually dropped out!)

"Y/N its impossible! I'm never going to understand it!" Sodapop sighed as he ran a hand though his hair. Soda was my best friend and I always tried to help him with his homework. We were in his and Ponyboy's room, books scattered across the bed. I grabbed the pencil from in his hand and pointed at the question.

"Soda, all you got to do is square it by this." I underlined the huge decimal number and chuckled. I found it funny how Sodapop took it to an extreme. One time he got so fed up that he teared out some pages with his teeth!

"Now.. you take that and put it here" I pointed it out on the page in his math book. Sodapop smiled a little then looked at me.

"God Y/N, I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have you here to help me all the time. You're a real good friend." He said as he looked back down at the book. He quickly finished the equation then pulled me into a hug. I was shocked, I didn't expect this sudden act of affection. Nevertheless I hugged back.

"What you hugging me for?" I questioned as I laughed lowly. I know Soda can be very touchy at times, but normaly he never gave me hugs, it was very occasional. Soda pulled away and looked at me with worry. I cocked a eyebrow at the blond-brown boy in confusion. He sighed and put his hands on my shoulders

"I just feel like I'm not going to pass, like I'm gonna flunk my year.. But since you're helping me I've been feeling a bit more confident. But god dammit! If I ain't gonna be passing, I might as well drop out... All I'm good at is auto mechanics and gym." Soda said sadly. I narrowed my eyes.

"Soda, dont say that about yourself! You ain't doing good, I understand but that's why I'm helping you! I want to continue to go to school with ya and I don't wanna see ya flunk and drop out.. it makes me sad how you don't see that you can progress!" I looked at him with a serious look. I could tell it made him feel uncomfortable. He slowly noded his head and smiled a little.

"Now c'mon, lets continue with this dreadful math." I mumbled as I ruffled his already messy hair.

"Y/N?" I looked at soda and cocked a eyebrow

"Hm?"

"Thanks for being there for me" he smiled. I nodded my head and smiled and we both continued to work on our homework.
