Callerya watched as Team Aqua released the last of the Grimer she trained on the ship into the sewers of Ironville.
'Bye-bye, Grimer! Have the best time!'
She could never bring herself to look at her Poké Balls before she stomped on them to sever her link to the Pokémon that once lived inside. One of the Grimer turned back, looking distraught. Callerya forced a bright smile.
'Hey, you're going to have so much more fun down here than you will with me, complaining about all the slime!'
There was a sharp hiss. The wild Rattata and Raticate had been agitated ever since the Groudon-and-Kyogre incident that almost destroyed Ironville. Firmino did his best to calm them down. His right-hand man, Epsilon, turned back to Callerya with a smile.
'These little guys will be a huge help. Thank you.'
The sewers were designed by an incompetent Cipher architect, the Luke Clemens that Rudolph tried to blame. Now there were no space tourists, there weren't as many ridiculous things flushed – Firmino once had to remove a bouncy castle – but 'fatbergs' still formed too often for Team Aqua's liking. Grimer were strictly controlled back then in case they damaged the city's bubble or airlocks, but now the air outside was breathable, there was no need for that. They would help Team Aqua by eating and absorbing the fatbergs.
'I'd say I'll be back to check on them, but... there's so much to do. I can't even get my head around it all!'
'You'll see their offspring around, for sure. But don't worry. We'll look out for them and keep you updated.'
Venera would bring some Magmar later. They could tolerate toxic gases and would warm the sewers to prevent them freezing. Callerya waved to the Grimer one last time before she returned to Delta Lab 1, taking in the open blue sky above her. Her memories of Mars were of a dusty red sky. She passed Juno, Lambert and an unfamiliar woman, weighing up unused stores and basements that could potentially become Contest Halls. Juno's Delcatty and Lambert's shiny Lopunny wore thick, wooly coats. A starry-eyed girl nervously approached to ask Juno to sign a poster. She gladly agreed as long as Delcatty could add a paw print. The girl looked worried when Delcatty got close, but she clasped the poster to her chest and kept glancing back at the Pokémon, smiling, as she walked away. Callerya smiled, too. She knew Juno and Lambert would appeal to people that Pokémon Trainers couldn't.
'Hey, y'all! How's it going?'
'Hiiii, Callerya!'
Juno beamed as brightly as ever. In her fluffy white coat and baby pink jeans, she looked so effortlessly stylish that it was impossible to tell she had just endured a long, stressful spaceflight. Callerya certainly didn't feel that relaxed. Lambert looked stylish, too, in a long red trench coat, but his eyes were weary. Juno introduced Callerya to the unfamiliar woman: Apolonia McArthur, descendant of the theatre master Opal and actress Diantha. She ran the only theatre in Ironville.
