In the end he loved her.
And he had no choice as to whether she would live freely, or not. Even though the mere though of Y/N's visage would torment his mind everyday, and he'd just be a small milestone in her life- he was content.
He was content with the idea of waiting.
He was content with the idea of being alone.
He even convinced himself that he'd be alright if she hated him in her afterlife.
At least Kaneki would always have the sweet ginger memories, and the image of Y/N in every corner of his mind. It was like a photograph that would never fade, and it was more realistic than ever.
"Kaneki, table four," Touka grumbled as she kept her pale eyes down while she finished her futile cleaning. Her body seemed perplexed and tension was developing around her- a feeling her and Kaneki had not experienced together since they had first met. This was his fault, undoubtedly.
His ghostly fingers reached to retrieve the notepad resting within reach behind the counter. Dark purples and blacks were decorating the sky, signaling that the night was only moments away, it was only waiting for it's opportunity to fully engulf the sky. Anteiku should be closing now since it was rare for any customer to remain at this time.
But his heart shook when his eyes darted across the room. Her silhouette was the same -painfully frail, but the same. Her H/L, H/C hair still reflected off of the lights, and even her eyes held some type of emotion. She was wearing the sweater he had bought the second week he had known her- even though the weather wasn't cool enough for it. Her leggings were ripped on her knees, and blood was dry and smeared across the black fabric. Y/N was alive and vivacious, a scene he was not expecting to witness.
In Y/N's wisps of hands, she held the novel "The Black Goat's Egg " tenderly in her grasp-
"Rize?!"
Kaneki shot up from his position in bed, his heart thumping as his fingernails curled into the sides of the mattress. Suddenly his lungs weren't large enough to hold the vast amounts of air he was inhaling at one time.
Pain was the only feeling registering throughout his body. Both mentally and physically.
The pain inside his body wouldn't subside as he remembered all he had done to her- all of the things Rize forced him to do.
This wasn't a lie. The death was his fault.
And now, she would only be his most important memory. A figure to paint Kaneki's mind whenever he wandered off and daydreamed and a recollection of hurt and every other terrible feeling he had experienced, alongside good ones as well.
This way, he figured, she would be his, and only his, until the day he stopped breathing.
Right before her life was gone before Kaneki's eyes, he felt a strong sense of power.
Now he would be her final memory as well- forever and always.
Y/N was bewitching to his mind and soul, and would never be forgotten.
[I'm going to be honest, I imagined many different endings to this book but my capability of writing can only go so far. I'm not fishing for compliments, but I don't think I can fully make people feel certain emotions when I'm writing some scenes so... but I love this story and it's ending.
The ending is what you make of it.
Happy reading!
