By now, all he could recall was the crimson blood seeping through the dark wood floorboards and a loud scream resonating down the corridor. His heart was beating at a rapid pace and he broke out into a sweat as he started down the hallway.
He could see her running before him, and no matter how fast he ran or how much determination fueled him to get to her, she'd forever be out of his reach.
It was happening all over again, and the pain was coming back.
The feeling of being left was still fresh and the wounds were deep and wide open for everyone to witness. Even the mention of her name could possibly make Kaneki's mind go blank, and that fact alone could be used against him.
So all he could do was watch from afar as the love of his human and ghoul life moved on, and the girl did not have the slightest idea that she had left a whole life behind, and caused a man to become a mere shadow.
But her ignorance is his bliss.
Knowing she was alive was enough to get him through another sleepless night, and another uneventful day.
Because there was also a pleasure in admiring the forbidden fruit. No matter how much he denied it, Kaneki knew a dark part of him couldn't wait for what was yet to come, and the blood splatter that would soon paint his walls.
All he had to do was wait.
~
I'll always be there for her, even if she doesn't know it.
I'm here waiting for her to remember me.
And when she does, we can elope and I won't let go unless it kills me.
There were things I should've said, and now I have nothing but...
Heartache.
