Aki never liked devils. They killed his family. They took away his happiness, his one hope, his future he held so closely to. Aki doesn't remember the last time he was hugged by his mother, or the fragments of his dad taking him on car rides. He remembers them dead, lifeless bodies lied ontop of each other, a devil's doing.
He never was happy since. He never found a reason to be. And it stayed that way.
He wished to fall in love with a powerful woman. A strong, independent lover who guarded him and kept him safe. To lighten his burdens, to make him laugh again. And to never leave his side.
He was hoping it would be Makima.
But tonight as he winds down asleep, his cold hands clutched onto the clothes of a being he wished he never laid his eyes on. But his smell was dragging him back into slumber, pushing him slowly into the darkness. He let himself fall, and told himself to forget whatever's happened tonight. To leave it for another day.
Of course, it wasn't the best plan to abruptly interrupt the moment two people shared with the excuse "I'm gonna go sleep now!" Whilst throwing the sheets ontop of himself to hide the redness from his face, and calling it a night. It was very cowardly of himself to act such a way, but he was too weak and tired to think of any other way out. The time has reached its 12th hour. He knew he couldn't take any more than this.
To his surprise, Angel never left his side. In the silence, he saw a shadow look over him, a glowing yellow halo floating above him. It stayed there, and after awhile, it dimmed.
Aki slowly removes the blanket, takes a last glance over to Angel, who's light head had been resting against his bed, long peachy hair like a stream, sprawled all over . His hair had always been shiny, but now that Aki has stared for the last 10 minutes, it's not just a light peach shade. It's almost a reddish pink. When the light hits the strands they turn a softer colour. He's noticed a few things about Angel during this silence.
The structure of his nose. His long eyelashes. The way his wings move and flinch whenever he's fighting the urge to sleep, and how they slump against his shoulders when he does like fallen angels do in reneissance paintings. The shape of his lips, the type of shampoo he uses.
There are no signs of him, as a devil, intending to kill him.
Angel's rhythm of breaths sounded like a lullaby, like a pendulum moving back and forth, making Aki's eyelids grow weary overtime. Alas, Aki's grip loosens as he begins to finally fall back asleep, knowing he's here beside him.
The next morning Aki woke to an empty bed, no trace of yesterday shown. The flowers set at his side were dehydrated, now tinted yellow. A part of him was disappointed by the fact Angel hadn't stayed till he woke up, but then again he wasn't anyone important. He was his co worker. Nothing else.
His voice starts ringing, and he picks it up.
"Hello?"
"How are you feeling, Aki-kun?" Her voice, confident as always, sent a shiver running down his neck.
"Better, Makima-san." He answered.
"Good. I'll meet you outside the hospital at 1. Don't be late, alright?"
"Yes, Makima-san."
And the phone call ended.
Back to work, back to driving Makima around. There was a brooming feeling in his chest, heavy. Aki ignored it at first, but his heart began to beat faster, there was anxiety. For what? He doesn't know either, which makes it even more terrifying. He got up, got dressed, and prepared himself to go.
"Nothing happened last night." He took a deep, long breath, and exhaled.
"Nothing happened last night."
