It's Monday.
But not just any Monday, it's Halloween. One of my favorite holidays. People back home never went out of their way to celebrate but the Professor's here always spice it up. They allow us to dress up slightly, whether it's doing cool things with our makeup or wearing colors that coordinate with the holiday, like orange, or purple. All day yesterday, me and the girls spoke and tried figuring out what we wanted to do in regards to today. Luna ended up making her own elf ears, which she decorated with earrings, making her look ethereal. Cho settled on something much more simple. She twisted and braided her hair in a way that matches a pirate. While myself, woke up extra early to create a faded skeletal makeup look.
As we made our way down the corridors of our beloved school, we saw many different and unique Halloween ideas that students put together over the weekend, creating such a diverse range. We didn't seem copies or multiples of one thing.
It wasn't until we went to our classes that we saw what our Professor's decided upon. McGonagall went with a cat, which was suiting for her. Since it's what her animagus is. Professor Binns thought he'd be funny by slipping on a plain white sheet with eye holes cut out. Despite him already being a ghost. This got a giggle out of almost everybody. Professor Sprout dressed up as a flower, nothing like the ones we see in her greenhouse, but just a simple daisy. Once inside potions, Professor Snape's costume didn't really show itself to us until he spoke. That's when I saw the vampire fangs. They're not long and gangly, they were just long enough to see when he opened his mouth. Something inside me sparked, seeing his fangs. I can't quite explain it but it made me feel nervous but in a invigorating way. Before the end of each period, every Professor handed out two pieces of candy to every student. It wasn't a lot compared to actual trick-or-treating but it definitely added some fun. After we received our candy from Professor Snape, he called the class to order.
"Tonight, the Headmaster has a Halloween party planned. Here is where you can go all out costume wise. Nothing inappropriate is allowed, which means nothing short or showing a lot of skin. That's the only rules really." Speaks Professor Snape.
The class sparks up excitedly in reply to this news.
"It won't start until 7:30 tonight. If anybody needs assistance with their costumes, please go to your Head of House."
He continues. By now, the bell ending class has rung, everybody bolting out. Ready to get on with the night.
The rest of the early afternoon went as it has all day. More candy from Professors, reminders about tonight's party, excited giggles and conversations from other students. At the end of the school day, Cho and Luna gathered in my room.
"A zombie? I think that'll be so cool!" Explains Luna as I told her about my costume change.
"That's kinda gross but you'll pull it off. I think you'll have the best costume there." Says Cho.
The girls helped me pull out some older clothes of mine, stuff I don't wear often enough to be devastated about if they were ruined. Which made them the perfect candidates for a zombie costume. Luna worked on the top, while Cho worked on the bottoms. Once they finished, they disappeared to their dormitories to get ready, leaving me alone to fix my hair and work on my makeup. Some black and purple eyeshadow around the eyes to make them looks bruised and hollow. I added a bit of red to show some form of infection, as well as some yellow. After working on my eyes, I did the same blending technique around my mouth, the corners specifically, and then finally around my jawline, neck and hair line. Adding more of certain colors to bring out the true effect. I meet with my friends in the common room at 7:20pm, almost my entire house I'm down there, ready to go once 7:30 hits. The costumes everybody had during the day is what we saw tonight, just amplified.
Once the clock hit half past seven, most of the students sped happily from the tower, while the three of us decided on letting the insanity die down first before exiting.
The two large doors were propped wide open with metal upside down L hooks. In place of the usual floating candles, there were jack-o-lanterns. Each face different. The inside was lit with small flames, creating a lovely orange hue. The ceiling was dark, a little cloudy with a full moon hidden behind a mist. Music was playing from an old looking gramophone. Some students were dancing with friends or partners, while others were enjoying the delicious treats that were laid out on the tables before us, while the rest were playing some games. Bobbing for apples, pin the nose of the scarecrow, and others.
The professors seemed proud of themselves as they watched the students enjoy themselves and have fun, knowing that they'll tell this story for years to come.
At the beginning, I felt nervous and to be honest, a bit self conscious as my friends pulled me up to dance. But as the night went on, I became much more confident. Letting the music overcome me and let my body flow. The entire time I felt as if I was being watched. At first I blew it off, thinking I was superstitious due to it being Halloween, but it wasn't until I turned my head fast enough to see Professor Snape watching me. Once he saw me looking at him, he turned away. I couldn't understand nor read his expression. I tried my best to sweep it under the rug.
It was just before 11pm when most of the Great Hall had cleared out, everybody tuckered out after hours of activity.
"That was so much fun!" Says Luna as we exit.
"I hope they do something similar for the holidays, before we leave to visit our families." Exclaims Cho.
I nodded in agreement, too tired to carry on much of a conversation. That and I was trying to go over Professor's Snape's body language throughout the night. The constant staring, the what I thought was nervousness anytime I got too close, the way I could feel his body tense up when I walked past him.
The girls went straight to their room after saying Goodnight. I got undressed, and cleaned my face vigorously to get all this makeup off. I put on a nightly moisturizer to help hydrate my skin after it being dried out by so much makeup.
After I got into my pajamas, i turned off all my lights except for the lamp and candle on my bedside table. I slipped under my fuzzy, blue blanket that my mother gifted me a few years back. The book I've been reading for the past week lay still beside me, waiting for me to get lost within its pages.
