"Iman! Hurry up! You're going to miss your flight!"

"Mama, I'm coming!" Ugh, I hate travelling... I'm going back to school. I attend Qatar University, and I regret ever getting admission to that school

"Iman, you're going to be late-Umar is waiting for you!"

"I said I'm coming!" I shouted, rushing down the stairs.

Before I could reach the bottom, a sharp smack landed on the back of my head.

"Ni zakiyi wa rashin kunya?"
I turned to see my mom, arms folded, looking younger than her years, despite the scowl. Petite and fair-skinned, her Shuwa Arab and Moroccan roots made her look like a woman in her twenties. Big eyes, full lips, and that forever youthful face-sometimes it annoyed me how stunning she looked even when she was mad.

"If you don't get out of this house now, ba sai na jefa miki takalmi ba, zaki san!"
(I will throw my slippers at you!)

"Haba, Mama," I laughed. "You know you're going to miss me."

"Ashe kin sani," she smiled, softening. "Come here, give me a hug. Allah ya bada sa'a."
"Ameen, ameen, Mama."

"Je kiyi ma babanki salama."

I walked into the parlour, smiling. "Salaam alaikum, Baba."

"Wa'alaikum salam."

"Baba, zan tafi."

"Toh. Allah ya kai miki lafiya, ya tsare ki, ya bada sa'a."

"Ameen, ameen. I'll miss you too, mamana."

"Je ki, Umar ya kaiki airport. If not, you'll miss your flight."

---

"Iman, hurry up! You're going to be late!"

"I'm coming!" I called out, dragging my suitcase behind me.

"If you like, don't come, Jaka," Umar muttered.

As soon as I got into the car, he started his usual rant.
"You're late for everything," he snapped. "Flights, lectures, deadlines-always late."

We arrived at the airport 45 minutes later. I boarded quickly, took a few snaps for my story, posted them, and just like that-we were in the air.

---

10 hours later...

I landed at Umar Bin Walid Airport. As I stepped out of arrivals, a familiar voice shrieked with excitement.

"Billy!"

"Iman! I missed you so much!"

"I missed you too!" I said, hugging her tightly.

"Let's go!" she said, grabbing one of my bags.

We slid into the car, and as we drove back to our apartment, "Body" was playing on the radio. Naturally, we sang at the top of our lungs and danced like madwomen. No shame, no care.

By the time we reached school, our voices were hoarse from the car karaoke. We parked, dragged our boxes in, and headed straight for our room.

The moment we stepped in, I threw myself onto the bed. "Ughhh, I'm so tired."

"Yeah, I think you should eat and change," Billy said. "Oh! And our technical drawing lecturer is sick, so we have a substitute teacher now."

"Alhamdulillah! Never liked that man anyway. He was too strict."

"Everybody's too strict for you," Billy shot back.

"Watt everrrr, I need to rest."

"Right after you eat and change," she replied, sounding way too much like my mother.

I rolled my eyes. "You know you're like a second mom to me, right?"

"Really?" she asked, raising a brow.

"Yeah."

"If you don't get out of here ba-" she began, reaching for a pillow.

I laughed and ran out of her room before she could pelt me with it.

After a long, soothing 15-minute bath, I ate, changed into something comfy, and finally collapsed into bed.

And just like that, I drifted into la la land.
