As soon as those words left Ghost's mouth you immediately focused and adjusted your grip on your gun.
Your stomach was pressed against the ground, a few of your packs on your utility belt were also contributing. As you laid, just barely peeking above the rooftop with your gun, you zoomed in on your targets.
The sky above you was dark, as a few unbroken streetlamps lit the streets, abandoned cars, various personal items, and anything you could practically dream of was piled in separate heaps. A few cement traffic stops were pulled in the middle of the road, acting as basic covering.
Ghost laid beside you, as silent as ever.
The two of you looked through your scopes, your only task was to back-up the ground squad that was actively getting into position to start their assault on the incoming enemies, using an element of surprise. The plan was to cut them off before they could join the warzone you had just been in the previous night.
Your earpiece was mostly silent, as you waited for the majority of groups to confirm their own positions.
Your heart was beating fast as the orders finally came in. "Move in."
You watched through the night vision scope of your gun, as the first shots were fired.
Over to the right of you, you could hear Ghost already taking out enemies with his sniper, you followed suit.
Shells and bodies dropped, leaving forming puddles on the ground, already soaking into the dirt.
As you zoomed in waiting for the perfect opportunity, the small cursor in the middle of the scope was lined, your finger pressed the trigger. You briefly watched as the body flopped down.
You switched targets, taking them down one by one.
Gunfire was heavy as gunpowder, screams, and the heavy padding of boots filled the air.
Everyone of your senses were filled, poised and primed for the killing. You were entirely focused as you kept taking shot after shot.
You could almost taste the iron on your tongue.
As you continued a crackling came over the earpiece before Soap spoke.
"Ghost, Splinter, enemy ground team headed your way", you could hear the heavy fire on Soap's end through his mic, as you processed this information.
"Roger", you heard ghost's voice break through the com.
Your eyes broke away from your scope, and you looked over to Ghost.
He was backing away from the ledge of the rooftop and you did the same. The two of you shared a brief moment of eye contact.
As the two of you stood you held your gun to your chest, your right index finger was poised.
"Let's get goin'", he said as he turned away from you and began walking over to the way in which you both had come.
You followed him down the stairs, being careful not to make too much noise. The two of you stalked around corners. Ghost would occasionally hold up his hand in a fist, standing unmoving before giving the go-ahead.
You were on edge as you finally made it down to the bottom of the building.
As soon as you got down, you immediately avoided any open spaces, practically sticking to the moss-covered walls, and dodging around windows.
The door you had come through was wide open, and you watched as the concrete outside began to be speckled with drops of rain. You internally sighed, not looking forward to a repeat of the previous night. Your thighs had had just about enough of crouching in the mud.
Ghost was next to you, and the two of you had just cleared a mostly empty room, using it as a quick spot to discuss your next move.
Immediately, you were alerted to several footsteps outside, and you flicked your head to Ghost.
Your eyes were wide, and your heartbeat kicked up.
Ghost dragged you into the corner of the room, directly behind the door, and he pressed you to the wall, shielding you from the rest of the room. You could feel the wall behind you as his body was directly being pressed onto yours as well, his face merely a few inches away.
"Don't make a peep", he whispered, his voice sending shivers down your spine.
Your heart was in your ears as you tried to focus on quieting your breathing, not realizing just how loud you were being.
The gun you had used not too long ago was clutched to your chest, as you listened to the footsteps rustle about outside.
Ghost's attention was focused on the old door, his cold gaze staring holes into it.
After a few moments, the padding of footsteps had entered the building.
Ghost immediately put his hand over your nose and mouth, ensuring that the enemy forces couldn't hear a pin drop.
The scent of fresh gunpower and mint filled your nose, as his skeleton glove took up most of your face. You could feel the fabric on your lips, as your own mask only covered the top part of your nose and up.
You clenched your gun harder; you could practically feel the whites of your knuckles poking up through your skin. Your attention was also focused on the door, as every step the enemy took your heart threatened to leap out of your chest.
No matter how many times you had been in this position, this game of cat and mouse with the enemy always put you on nerve. One single mistake and a bullet would be through and out the other side of your head.
A shiver went down your spine at the thought.
You heard one of the enemy forces speak up. "I could've sworn those sniper shots came from this building". He sounded young and had an American accent.
This American accent was peculiar, as there weren't supposed to be any among the enemy forces.
Another one of the armed men spoke up, "Even if it was, they're long gone." Yet again, an American accent.
You and Ghost shared eye contact and you immediately knew he had noticed as well.
Your eyes darted back to the dilapidated door as the group made their way out of the building.
By now, the rain had picked up as it started to pour.
Your gaze lingered on the door before sliding back to Ghost. After a few moments he backed away, and you felt the fabric of his glove lift off of your lips. You had been so used to the position you slightly wished it had lasted longer.
Ghost spoke over the intercom; his voice was louder and gruffer than before.
"Come in, Soap. Me 'n Splinter are heading to the front; our cover was almost blown"
"Soap here, confirm once you're there."
"Got it."
Ghost looked back over to you as he ended the communication.
You nodded and the two of you left the room and snuck out the door the group of enemy soldiers had come through not all that long ago.
The rain continued pelting down, mixing the blood puddles with rainwater and mud.
The two of you stepped lightly, clinging to walls while moving bent over and peering around corners. Occasionally stopping and then going.
After a while, Ghost peeked around a house, spying a tall building in the distance.
He motioned to it, before looking back at you. "That one, right there."
You followed his finger with your gaze as you peeked around behind him.
Another dilapidated building, much like the one you had just left, stood taller, taller than the last one. Though it was more isolated, leaving little room to escape.
You nodded, "Let's do this."
