( MOVING DAY )
chapter one — Scarlett

SCARLETT shoved the last of their clothes into their suitcase before zipping it up. Her twin sister, Stacey, suddenly appeared in the doorway of Scarlett's room. "Hey, we're leaving in five minutes. Make sure you're ready," Stacey said. Scarlett, still a little annoyed her parents decided to pack up everything and move, just nodded. Their sister's mouth moved into a thin awkward smile, and she walked away. Scarlett quickly slipped on her sneakers and jacket, and grabbed her bags.

"Hey, sweetie. You excited?" their mom asked as they walked downstairs.

She forced a smile towards their mom and slipped into the car next to their older sibling, Riley. Riley had come out as non-binary two years prior. Their immediate family had gotten used to it and fully supported them, but their extended family wasn't quite as supportive. That wasn't the reason they were moving though.

Riley turned towards Scarlett, "Someone's depressed. Is it the tree?"

"Why would I be that attached to a tree? That's stupid," Scarlett replied.

"Don't worry little sis, you'll find another tree in Stoneybrook," Riley tried to side hug their sister, but Scarlett pushed them off, facing the window.

"I'm not attached to a random tree. I've told you that twice now," the younger sibling hissed.

Riley nodded, "I know. I can count." Scarlett rolled her eyes at them. A multiple small ding sounds from her phone startled them. They flipped it over to see a text from Freya, her best friend.

my headache❣️
hey
are u not gonna say bye to me?
dont u dare ignore me i can see u lookin at this bitch

Scarlett jumped out of the car just as her mom climbed in. "Scarlett! Get in the car please. We need to leave if we're going to beat the traffic!" their mom yelled out to them. She ran across to the other side of the street to Freya. Freya stood waiting for her with her arms wide open. Scarlett finally made it and the two girls wrapped their arms around each other.

"I'm gonna miss you," Freya sobbed.

"I'm gonna miss you too,' Scarlett's tears made a small wet patch on her best friend's shoulder. Their mom called for them one more time. She stepped back and wiped their tears, "I have to go." Scarlett and Freya laughed as Scarlett's mom yelled her name again.

Freya nodded, "Yeah. You don't want your mom to murder you before we can even text each other. Speaking of, make sure to call me at least once a day, and fill me in on everything that happens in Stoneybrook. Promise." She held out her pinky, and Scarlett linked it with theirs. The two girls kissed their linked pinkies.

     "Promise."

Scarlett walked back towards the car, tear stains covering their cheeks. She climbed in and slipped their headphones on. Music began to play as her mom drove off. They kept staring out of the window for the whole two hour drive.

Two hours doesn't seem that far, but they're probably never coming back to New York. Scarlett hated it. Her whole family packed up and moved just because of some feud Stacey and her friend had.
