chapter four — Kristy

ON FRIDAY, Kristy and Mary Anne walked together to the Kishi's house. Once they got there, they knocked on the door, and a bright-smiled Mimi answered.

"Hey," Kristy said as Mimi laughed and brought them in for a hug. "How are you?"

"Good. The other girls are upstairs. I'll make tea." Mimi pointed as the two put their bags down.

Despite being confused about the "girls" part, Kristy thanked Mimi.

As they made their way upstairs, Kristy turned to Mary Anne. "'Girls'? Plural?" she questioned. Her friend just shrugged.

They passed by Janine and said a quick hello, but only got a long glare in return with an automatic door slam.

The two girls walked into a much brighter bedroom greeted with two girls talking and another girl on the floor with headphones on.

The girl with headphones immediately caught Kristy's attention. She was drawing on her hand with a dark blue pen and had a textbook, notebook, and different papers sprawled out in front of her. Their head was bobbing up and down, so Kristy figured they were listening to music.

Claudia and some other girl that Kristy didn't recognise were talking and laughing like they were best friends.

"Hey," Kristy caught the girls' attention—apart from the girl on the floor—as she and Mary Anne walked in.

"Hey guys," Claudia greets them. "Kristy, Mary Anne, these are my friends Stacey McGill and Scarlett McGill."

Stacey walked over next to Claudia. "Hi." She then turned to the girl on the floor, groaned, walked over to her, and snatched off the headphones.

Scarlett looked up at her sister, "Hey! What was that for?" She then took notice of the other two people in the room and awkwardly stood up.

"Uh, hey," she said.

Claudia continued. "They just moved to Stoneybrook from New York."

"Where in New York?" Mary Anne jumped to ask.

"Oh, the city," Stacey shrugged.

Kristy saw her friend's eyes light up. "You mean, like, Manhattan?"

"Yeah, the Upper West Side."

Mary Anne gasped in awe, as if being from the city was the coolest thing you could possibly be. Kristy didn't really see the hype.

"So this babysitting things sounds pretty chill," Stacey said, breaking the silence.

Kristy looked at Claudia in shock and annoyance. "You told her?"

"Sorry, was it a secret?" Claudia walked back over to the group with a giant book in hand.

"Not technically," Kristy mumbled.
