Chapter 6 - Terry
"Son of a bitch," I muttered, hanging up. I can't believe him. One bet and a blow job, he thought he could ghost me. He owes me money. I did him a favor and he promised me $5,000.
"What did he say?" Hannah asked.
"Same old bullshit," I told Hannah. I growled. "I can't believe I trusted him."
"But we need to pay the rent," she said, putting her blonde hair up in a tight ponytail.
"I know." I slammed my phone on the coffee table. We had until the 6th to pay. I still had more time, so we could make a partial payment. I checked my banking account. $330. Shit, there's no food in the fridge. "How much do you have?" I asked.
"Uh, $400," she responded.
"Perfect, we can pay for partial rent, I can buy groceries with the last $30 dollars and pay the rest next week. Send it to me so I can pay it to keep a roof over our heads." She sighed. I waited as the Zelle notification came through. I paid $700 online. I took a deeper breath. Aldi's here I come. I could beg for an extension for back rent. It could be the great opportunity to pay Damon a visit. I wore my shoes, grabbed my purse and wore my sunglasses on top of my head. "I'll be back."
"Where are you going?" She asked, digging in her chips before taking a bite.
"Running errands. Destroy Damon. Possibly. " I smiled tightly, opening the door. I chose violence today. I would love to see his beautiful face mangled. I slammed into a wall. "Ow." I rubbed my forehead. Two cops were standing in front of me. A male cop and a female cop with files and notepad in hand. They grinned. "Hello? Can I help you?"
"Good afternoon. We are in the middle of an investigation. Are you Terry Sawyer?" the male cop asked me.
"Yes?" It came out as a question.
"We are speaking with everyone that signed the guest lists at a party last weekend. Are you going somewhere?"
"Supermarket," I told him.
"Do you need a lift?" he offered.
"I have a car. Thank you."
"Is there a Hannah Ferrell in this residence?"
"She's here. She's my roommate." Once her name was called, she peeked over and waved.
"Hello. We are on an investigation. Do any of you know Damon Dallas?" Shit, they knew. I warned him and they know. He begged me to erase his trace of information regarding him with Judy and Sven then and there at the party. I didn't have my laptop, I did it on my phone with my vpn firewall. They probably traced it and found me here. I've been doing too many favors for him. Enough is enough. He's not dragging me or Hannah down with his bullshit. I breathed through my nose and said "yes. But barely. I ran into him at the party. We met that night. That's how I know his name." I held my hands from shaking, squeezing it into a fist. Hannah patted my upper back, noticing that I was panicking internally.
"Huh." The female cop wrote down on her pad. Then she pulled out two pictures of a man and a woman. "What about these two?" I'm trying my best not to give away any type of face to show I know them. I met them two months ago, along with Damon. Since they new I was good with computers, I was known for coding and infiltrating on a freelance level since being laid off from my IT job last year. The job market sucked, I made more money. Meeting them, they were nothing but scammers and shit artists. I'm lying for them but I refused to go to jail for them. Fuck that.
"Same. I ran into them at the party. I remember taking shots with them. I never saw them again." I swallowed silently. "Is everything ok?"
"They're missing."
"Missing?"
"They fled a crime scene."
"Crime scene?" I kept repeating their statements.
"A person died and two others are in critical condition." I frowned, looking at Hannah. Her jaw dropped and eyes bugged. Died? We were in that room for ten minutes. How did that happen? I did a line with Damon and Judy. Hannah did body shots. I shook my head.
"Do you have any leads? It's not us, is it?" Hannah asked.
"We're checking on everyone that was at the party."
"Ok."
"Thank you." She handed me a card and said, "we'll be in touch." I nodded and escorted them out. I shut the door. I could finally breathe, holding my chest.
"Terry, why did you-" I clamped her mouth shut and told her to shhh. I looked in the peephole if they left yet. Good, they did. I went to the window, peeking through the curtain if they left. I saw them in the parking lot talking amongst themselves. I watched them enter their car and drove away. I nibbled my top lip. "Are we good?" She asked, staring at me with her blue eyes.
"Yeah." I nodded.
"Why did you lie? We met them last night."
"I know, but nothing happened. Someone died, Hannah. They're not telling us everything. Especially those cops."
"You should have told the truth." I rolled my eyes. Hannah, the virtue signaler. She was no better. She wanted to party and got it. Those fucking people. They're a part of this. Damon. I needed to find that bastard. He told me he was going to visit his cousin. Damn liar. I shouldn't have trusted him. I Inhaled again. Figuring out what to do. I can't think.
"This is bullshit. I'm hungry. We gotta get some food for the place."
"Fine, can you drop me off before you go?"
"Where?"
"At Mcintires. I'm meeting with a literary agent."
I gasped. "Really?" She's been writing day and night for a year. She finally got her big break.
"Yeah, they wanna publish one of my books and meet with one of the publishing houses."
"Hannah! That's awesome. Congrats." I gave her a big hug. She chuckled and said thanks.
"When are you meeting them?"
"In twenty minutes. I thought I had time to get an Uber since my car's in the shop but i can't get it yet since we have to pay rent. I'm hoping this is it."
"This is it! I'll take you." She grinned, taking her laptop bag, purse and mug.
"Let's hit it." I was proud of her. She got her big break. Working a 9 to 5 at a job that didn't appreciate her and her skills. It wasn't fair. We got in the car. I texted Damon again if I could meet him. He didn't text me back. I'm waiting for him. Looking for him. He owed me. He could ghost me all he wanted. He owed me.
