The midday bell rang, signaling the long-awaited lunch break. Students eagerly filed out of the classroom, ready to satisfy their rumbling stomachs. Kikuchi glanced at the clock, surprised by how quickly the time had passed. "The ok time for lunch. It's already lunchtime," she remarked to herself.
As she gathered her belongings, Kikuchi noticed Izumi, sitting alone at a table near the window. Without hesitation, she approached him. "Hi, Izumi. Do you mind if I sit with you?" she asked, with a nervousness in her voice.
Izumi looked up, slightly taken aback by her request. "No, it's okay," he replied warmly, gesturing for her to take a seat.
As they settled down, Izumi couldn't help but reflect on the situation. "Now that I think about it, this is my first time ever eating lunch with a classmate," she thought to herself.
Curiosity brimmed in her eyes as she turned to Izumi. "Izumi, what do you like to do?" she asked, genuinely interested in getting to know him better.
A flicker of surprise crossed Izumi's face. "I play the piano, just like you," he replied, his voice laced with a hint of enthusiasm. "Though, it seems like most people don't play the piano anymore."
A smile of understanding graced Kikuchi's face. "Oh, really? That's wonderful! What's your favorite song to play?" she inquired, her eyes bright with anticipation.
"Liebesleid, Love's Sorrow by Kreisler," Izumi answered, a touch of melancholy in his voice. "It's a beautiful but haunting piece.
Kikuchi's eyes widened with surprise. "I love that one too! It's so emotionally charged," she exclaimed. "But if I had to choose, my favorite to play would be Clair de Lune by Debussy."
However, their newfound camaraderie was interrupted by the unwelcome intrusion of another student. "Hi, what is a beautiful girl like you hanging around with a loner?" a voice sneered.
Kikuchi's smile faded, replaced by a look of displeasure. "Hey, don't be mean to Izumi. He is not a loner," she defended
The voice belonged to a boy who exuded arrogance. "He is nothing but a sad loner freak," he spat, his words dripping with venom.
Izumi's calm demeanor cracked, and his fists clenched in anger. "He is not a loner. He just doesn't want to talk to jerks like you," she said back, his voice resolute.
Their confrontation escalated quickly, turning into a heated exchange. "Shut up, you white-haired freak," the arrogant boy jeered, his words accompanied by a swift tug at Kikuchi's hair.
"Ouch!" Kikuchi winced, feeling the pain shoot through his scalp.
Izumi gets up and looked at him and said "what the hell did you do that for?"
Kikuchi gently reached out to touch Izumi's hand, a gesture of "Come on, Izumi," she said softly. "Let's get out of here."
They hurriedly made their way through the school corridors, their footsteps echoing in the empty hallways. Izumi followed Kikuchi, feeling a mixture of gratitude and curiosity. "Where are we going?" he asked, his voice filled with uncertainty.
Kikuchi turned back, a mischievous smile "To this classroom," she replied, pointing to a door. "We can hide here, and he won't be able to find us, dummy."
Izumi thought to himself "this is the first time I have run in years,"
Reluctantly, Izumi entered the classroom, realizing that Kikuchi was right. It would be their safe haven for now. As he looked at her, he noticed a slight wince. Concern filled his eyes. "Kikuchi, is your hair okay?" he asked, reaching out to touch her injured scalp.
