UKI LEARNED THE INS AND OUTS OF BEING A 'VIGILANTE' in early 2012. Often, Uki would save people. Though that was a time when she believed in humanity.
She also often listened to her name pop up in news channels and read newspapers degrading her work as an Indigenous woman.
She knew there wasn't a place for her to be merciful and nice. And Uki developed a cold heart.
Not many knew about the double life Frankie was in- not even Frankie herself, up until she met Matt. But Uki knew everything about Frankie. Uki knew Sam wasn't Sam. The one Frankie knew. But Uki was overprotective of Frankie. She wanted badly to shield Frankie from everything, every bad memory, every bad emotion. She lead Frankie to believe she actually lived through an amazing life - because every time something bad happened, Uki took over. Uki protected her.
Uki left Frankie to watch Sam die, though. As much as it was a loss for Frankie, in a way it was a loss for Uki, too. Uki didn't want to see Sam die. Uki loved Sam as much as Frankie did. Even if Sam wasn't who he said he was.
Uki didn't approve of Matthew, though. She probably was on guard from the lineup of men that Frankie dated, each being a different version of fucked up or stupid. Uki felt terrible that Frankie felt that any of her ex-boyfriends were nice, Uki felt she was at fault for not giving her the truth, not letting her live through something bad, because that's what normal people do. Nevertheless, Uki's mission was to protect Frankie at all costs, and she wasn't going to be nice anymore.
IT WAS TWELVE AM, Frankie figured that Kallik was no longer safe in Hell's Kitchen. The two, Matt and Frankie, got her a ticket back to New Haven where she wouldn't be abducted by Castle's acquaintances.
"From now on, I am going to visit you. Do not come back here, aquii. (idiot)"
"Nuirdjuk. (Short legs.)"
"Nipaitit, (shut up,) uqaqtuqamni. (do as I say.)"
"Nagligivagit. (I love you)"
"Nagligivagit." As Kal left, Frankie felt sad. She never got to spend time with her sister, she didn't even know what she was up to with Castle, or what he wanted with her.
Frankie knew they were romantically involved, but she knew how much of a danger Castle was, and understood that he wasn't the greatest to her. She didn't want her little sister intertwined with a nation-wide criminal and murderer. But she felt a little hypocritical since she was involved with a vigilante. But that's what big sisters are for, right? Protecting their younger siblings?
Nicky and Martin would soon blow up her phone with angry, but grateful texts. She was the big sister, but she wasn't the big brother. They always acted too overprotective and dramatic about everything and anything.
"Are you gonna tell me what language that was?" Matthew asked as they walked out of the airport.
"Inuktitut. She just called me short legs, I told her to shut up and do as I say and we ended up saying we loved each other."
"Say the 'shut up and do as I say' again," he said, amusingly.
"You'll have to wait for that one, Matt." Frankie smiled, lightly punching his shoulder.
TW AHEAD: domestic abuse, SA
The two arrived at Frankie's apartment, feeling relieved that they had finally finished their mission. Frankie remembered only a few things from their encounter with Frank Castle. She was conflicted, scared and confused.
"Who am I?" She asked, not expecting an answer.
"Uki. In 2012, you started being a vigilante." He paused, worried of what kind of reaction she would have. "But news anchors, newspapers, they all started to discredit your work. You started being a lot more violent. You took out your anger against racist and misogynistic men. You also took down a human trafficking circle- and, I guess finished the work I did."
All Frankie could do was sit there and listen.
"But, I'm not capable of doing that." She explained, "There's no way I could do that, right?"
"Frankie, you can't. But Uki can. That's a different side of you."
"But what's this other side of me? How come I've only learned about her now?" She wondered aloud.
"Listen, Frankie, I'm here. No matter what. Uki helped you find your sister. Would you have had the guts to do it yourself?" He said, rather bluntly.
"Um, I guess not. If I knew it was going to be violent." She said, understanding the bloodied Ulus she had.
"Look at Uki in a way that she's protecting you." He said, trying to understand it himself.
She nodded, still weary of who she really was, and the violent crimes she committed.
"Uki is smart with how she does things," Matt said, "Don't worry about anything else other than who you are right now."
He helped ground her, but the question of who Uki was still lingered. "Thank you, really." She sighed.
But Matt sensed the calm heartbeats, instead of Frankie's.
"Did Uki just speak with me or did Frankie?" Matthew questioned.
"Don't worry Devil, I let her listen." Uki said. "But yeah, you're right. I do protect Frankie. But I never finished your work."
"Help me understand this." Matt asked, completely disregarding what she said.
"I'd have to tell you my whole life story, Murdock."
"So tell me," he urged.
"It's not that simple. You're right, I do protect her. I take over when she's feeling too much." Uki started, "But I don't know if I can just tell you these things."
"I do this for Frankie,"
"So do I."
"Great, then we have something in common." Matt said. "Anything that you want to say, you can tell me."
Matthew tried to act the same way towards Uki as he did Frankie, but he suspected that Uki would be different, Uki wouldn't give into Matt's charms as much as Frankie did.
Uki hummed, "Right."
He let her stay silent. To marinate with her thoughts.
"I protect her, a lot." She sighed. "Matthew, you don't understand how much I have seen."
He nodded, listening carefully.
"I saw... the home invasion of my family." She spoke quietly. As cold and hard as she wanted to seem, even Uki had feelings. "I saw moments where I took beatings from boyfriends. I lived through... sexual violence. That's not all, Matthew."
"I'm here. For you." Matthew said, grabbing ahold of her hand. "Not just Frankie."
It took Matt a lot to not get angry, at the fact that Frankie had lived through so much, yet learned to cope through the help of Uki. Matthew wanted to find those men that hurt her and make sure they couldn't walk again.
"I know you are." Uki said, "But I can't trust you yet. Frankie might, but I don't."
"That's understandable."
"Why do you care?" Uki asked.
Matt sighed, "Because. I.. like Frankie. I signed up to be apart of this when I knew you were going against Frank Castle."
"I can handle myself."
"I know you can. But, if I'm going to be in your life, I can't sit and watch you do this by yourself." Matt had started to talk as if Uki and Frankie were one person, because they were. But, he was only trying to get used to it still.
"Another thing I'm looking into is Sam Dunst."
"Your ex-boyfriend?"
"Died in 2012." She started, "Or at least Frankie thinks so."
