1 : A DAY IN MY LIFE
I cannot help but grin widely as I read the lengthy text message my mother sent me this morning; ecstatic while warmth spreads across my cheeks. I immediately type in a quick reply and hit send before putting my phone back inside my desk drawer. I grab my cup of coffee—double shots of espresso from my favourite café which I bought earlier to keep me awake until my duty is off.
"You seem to be very happy on this fine Friday morning," Jongsuk states as he enters the doctors' office of the Neurology Department, which startles me as I thought I am actually the only one around in the office at this hour, looking up at him from my desk.
"You're here..." I infer dumbly. "You're done with your rounds?"
Jongsuk chuckles as his brow quirks up.
"Yeah, I'm already through with our neuro patients. And where do you think I would be? I belong in this department, if I remember correctly."
"I'm sorry, okay? I know that's so dumb of me. I just didn't notice you coming in."
"That's because you're acting like someone who is under anesthesia. Are you sure you're drinking coffee?" Jongsuk briefly pauses, eyes widening in sudden realization. "Wait. He'll be visiting this weekend, isn't he?"
"Yes," I grin excitedly, nodding my head.
"Yah! You should've tol-"
But Jongsuk stops talking midway when our pagers suddenly go off, beeping nonstop.
We look at each other.
Damn, another toxic day, huh?
A fellow enters our office in a frantic, exclaiming, "Dr. Lee, Dr. Kim. BFD Plan 2, multiple car crash, mass casualty. There are multiple trauma patients who are just minutes away, and we need as many doctors as we can in the ER. Let's go!"
_
The three of us step out of the elevator just in time to see EMTs entering the lobby with stretchers upon stretchers of bloody patients. The fellow who is with us runs instantly to the ER. Yeri, one of the ER nurses, leads me and Jongsuk to a gurney on the side. I take deep breaths as I apply my hands with a generous amount of hand sanitizer before slipping a new pair of surgical gloves on.
"What do we have?" Jongsuk asks as he routinely checks the patient.
"Female omega. 26. Head trauma. GCS 3, unresponsive in the field. 23-24 weeks pregnant," an EMT informs us.
