Why Do We Sleep?

Part 1

The day was like any other. Adaline walked home alone in the bitterness of January. She slouched over wearing the same jacket she always wore to hide her frozen tears. It was Tori, as usual.

She laughed tiredly

Isn't it amazing how your best friend, the person you trusted the most, can become your biggest tormentor? Poof! Just like that, they hate you.

Adaline sat down on the curb in her usual spot, a block away from her home. She tried to "fix" her face so that her mother wouldn't know she had been crying.

Former best friend, Tori now enjoyed spending her days making Adaline feel like a fool for simply knowing the truth.

"My dad IS alive! EVERYONE thinks I am just being sentimental, but I know I am right."

She couldn't explain how, except that deep down in her gut, she knew he was out there, somewhere.

"Heh, it's funny this whole crying/curb thing has been a routine for a year."

Adaline's dad disappeared on the 21st of January. Of all days, her birthday.

Adaline walked through the front door of her cluterd, and cold, home. Her mother, Anna,over-the-top self. "Addy! How was school? did you and Tori hang out? Are you excited for tomorrow!?" Anna (Adaline's mother) practically shouted. " No mom I'm not, why should I?"Adaline replied very unenthused. "Well, It IS your 15th birthday. You know how something special happens."Anna said ignoring what else happened on her birthday, "Anywho I'm making your favorite! Hamburgers!" Adaline responded in disbelief"Mom, those are Jessicas favorite." "Oh yeah, sorry hon I will order a pizza right away!" Anna walked away proud of herself. Adaline walked into her room and shut her door. She thought to herself"Pizza is Ava's favorite, Potatoes are Janels, and mine is chili." (The Sisters: Janel age 19, Jessica age 17, Adaline age 14 but her birthday is tomorrow, Ava age 12) Adaline closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

She Saw a neverending Black room. A fire appeared. Adaline walked close to the fire, she looked at it very curiously with the flames lighting up her ember eyes. the fire then turned into a chest. a silver key laid in front of it. Inside the chest, there was something trying to escape. Adaline unlocked the chest and Some red, green, and grey surrounded her. They made it impossible for her to move then began entering her lungs and nostrils. she couldn't breathe. All of the gas made its way inside Adaline. She sat up abruptly realizing it was only a dream.

January 21, 2018

Her head was pounding and as she attempted to stand up and the room span. Anna opened the door and questioned Adaline, "Why are you on the floor? Get up we're leaving! if you don't want to walk to school hurry up." Adaline tried her best to hurry but sure enough, her mom and sisters had left without her. She picked up her phone and put it up to her ear, "Mae, Can you come to pick me up? I need to talk to you anyways."

After a few minutes, Adaline got in Mae's car. Mae was concerned and said "Hey are you okay? you don't look good." Adaline replied, "I'm fine, my head hurts. You know what though, I have never felt like this before. It's all from that stupid dream last night." Mae's interest suddenly peaked, "Um what was your dream?" Adaline told her the dream as Mae drove them to school. When they got there Mae got Adaline a drink, "Here, drink this. It might help your head." Adaline drank it, "thank y..." Mae caught Adaline before she fell to the ground, "I'm sorry D." Adaline went completely unconscious.
