Pain

“Hey Pain,” Brian waved as he walked into the room that held Toby, “I see you got the latest victim.”

“If I may ask, what happened to the poor boy?” The complex’s doctor asked as he continued pulling bullets from Toby’s pale legs, “Is Tim to blame for this damage?”

Brian nodded as he seated himself in one of the swiveling chairs that was in front of Pain’s desk. He could hardly watch as the doctor dug into Toby’s flesh and carved into it to pull the small pieces of metal out. Every time Pain did anything Brian could swear he heard the sound, which he found absolutely sickening. Blood slowly trickled from the holes, adding to the gruesome sight. It was a good thing Pain had an IV and blood-bag all set up.

“Ah, I see.” Pain momentarily looked at the grossed out man, “Every time you bring someone in, Tim's usually done his damage to them. He’s too brutal, feral, even.”

Brian again nodded, slightly spinning in the chair. “I tried telling him that…but he…we got into another fight.” The guilt manifested again, “I mean, I won. But, you know how I am.”

Pain sighed and turned his full attention to the man seated at his desk, “You didn’t do anything wrong, Brian. Tim brought it on himself, he knows how harsh he is.”

Brian shook his head, once again dwelling on the fight. To ease his thoughts he looked out the window, finding comfort in the setting sun. Ribbons of pink, blue and yellow adorned the sky; creating a peaceful sight for Brian to silently confide in.

“I hate to continue making you dwell on all of this, but is there a file on this boy?” Pain asked, pulling the hooded man from his sunset.

“Oh, uh, yea. Here.” Brian said while pulling a small stack of papers from his pack pocket.”

Pain removed his bloodied gloves and took the small stack, quickly reading the pages. He was very intrigued when he scanned over Toby's medical conditions; tourettes and CIPA, along with a few others. Another page was filled with his recorded past. Pain read about the abuse, the death of his sister, when he killed his father, ran away and how he evaded the cops.

“Wow…He’s been through a lot. It’s a shame he’s been pulled into this place, his life is going to be much worse.” The doctor shook his head.

And he was right. It was a shame. Even if Toby was a terrible person, who was graced with a sadistic side, he didn’t deserve what was about to happen to him. No one at the complex deserved what they had gotten. Most of them, Toby included, were already dealt unpleasant cards, what came after only added to it. No one within the walls of the complex would ever have a good life.

The two men dwelled in silence, unable to lift the mood that had been brutally killed, not that it was ever good to begin with. Brain had just dealt with a fight and everything that happened with Toby. And Pain was simply ordered to deal with some random teen’s wounds. Both of them were thrust into unpleasant situations and didn’t know how to take it.

Finally Brian broke the silence, “I guess I should make sure Tim didn’t kill himself or anything. Thanks for taking care of Toby.”

“Of course, Brian.” Pain nodded as he continued working on the teen’s injured body.
