Chapter 2: The Break In
Laughter could be heard from the house in which Joker and Harley were standing outside of. The family of three were having dinner, celebrating the birthday of their little girl. Joker began to grin from cheek to cheek and Harley looked confused.
"What are we doing here, puddin'?" innocently inquired Harley.
"Just clearing up a few loose ends," said Joker with a sly, sinister smile.
"I thought you said we were done with this type of life," said Harley, pouting and turning her back on the Joker.
"Now puddin', you're not going to leave me now are you? I need your help, no one is going to get hurt. I promise," said Joker.
Harley, feeling ashamed, turned to face Joker.
"I'm sorry puddin', I trust you," replied Harley, her voice low and quiet.
The backdoor to the house was opened, causing Joker to devise his plan.
"I'm going to go through the backdoor, I need you to find a way upstairs and meet me in the living room," ordered Joker.
"What are you going to do puddin'?" asked Harley.
"I just need to ask him a few questions and we will be on our way," replied Joker.
Harley nodded and went up the fire escape of the two story house. She pulled at the window with ease and unlocked it, climbing through. She landed inside of the little girl's room filled with princesses and family photos. One in particular caught her eye, the photo of the little girl and her mother. A tear rolled down her face as the images of her past filled her brain. The person she was before she had met the Joker crept back for a moment but was interrupted by screaming coming from below. Her stomach dropped and she rushed down the stairs and was haunted at the sight she witnessed. The living room carpet was stained with a fresh pool of blood and a man with a carved smile. The screams of the little girl and her mother, who was guarding her daughter with all of the strength left inside her, were deafening to Harley's ears, and the laugh of the Joker seeped down her spine. Her stomach was inside out and she felt betrayed.
"What are you doing?" cried Harley.
The Joker turned around with his face covered in the father's blood.
"Oh Harley, you're just in time for the party!" replied Joker
Joker grabbed the mother by her hair and pulled her in as the little girl cowered in fear in the corner, helplessly watching.
"Why the long face, sweetheart?" said the Joker.
"Please, leave my daughter alone, she's just a little girl!" begged the mother.
"I know, that's the best part!" grinned the Joker.
Harley grabbed Joker by the shoulder and tried to pull him back. He turned around and smacked her, letting go of the mother.
"You stupid bitch, who the fuck do you think you are?" screamed the Joker.
Harley was on the ground as the Joker loomed over her.
"She's just a little girl, she doesn't need to lose her mother too," pleaded Harley.
The Joker just started laughing hysterically.
"Don't be upset puddin', after I'm done with both of you, she won't have to watch any longer," the Joker said, still laughing.
Harley tried getting up to free herself but it was to no avail, the Joker had her pinned down. He beat Harley until she became completely unconscious, and Joker turned to the mother. The demon that lived inside of the heart of the Joker was unleashed on the mother and he drug the knife through her chest and dragged it down through her stomach, laughing as she bled out. The little girl watched in horror as the Joker began to approach her but in the distance, police sirens could be heard, causing the maniac to flee. He grabbed Harley and began running out the back where Harley had come in. However as the police raided the house, it seemed as if Joker escaped. He was heading down the path to his vehicle until a shadow blocked his way. A blue symbol filled his vision and as the batons came up, The Joker knew who it was. He dropped Harley and pulled out his knife.
"So, the boy wonder returns, new suit huh? Trying to do your best impression of the big man?" mocked Joker.
"I'm the one you should fear, not him," replied Nightwing.
"Oh, what are you going to do, take me back to that piece of shit island, I'm just starting to have fun?" laughed the Joker.
"No, I'm taking you back to hell," said Nightwing as he turned on the electricity in his batons.
"Oh, look who finally grew a pair, I'm sure the girl would've appreciated that," grinned the Joker.
Nightwing got prepared to attack the Joker but his goons popped out of the van behind him. They surrounded him.
"Take out the trash when you're done boys," called the Joker as he hopped into the van, which promptly began speeding off. The goons surrounded Nightwing with bats and crowbars, their faces covered with clown paint. One of them charged Nightwing, who briskly jumped into the air as the criminal ran underneath him. Landing, Nightwing harshly kicked the goon to the ground in one swift motion. As the other goon approached he was met with the electricity of nightwing's batons, and the last was whacked over the head. When Nightwing finally looked up the van was gone and his vision turned red out of rage. He grabbed one of the goons.
"Where did he go?" demanded Nightwing.
"Go to hell!" replied the goon.
"TELL ME!" screamed Nightwing, aggressively shaking him.
The goon shook his head causing Nightwing to punch him and beat him gruesomely. The blood seeped down the face of the goon and overshadowed all of the clown paint. The other goons watched in horror but were saved as the GCPD ran onto the scene. The cops began arresting the goons and Jim approached Nightwing.
"Was he here?" asked Jim.
"Yes," replied Nightwing.
Jim walked up behind him and put his hand on Nightwing's shoulders.
"We'll find him," assured Jim.
As Nightwing turned to look at Jim, he saw the little girl walking out of the house covered in a blanket. Next to her, the ambulance was rolling the two bodies of her parents away.
"What happened in there?" asked Nightwing.
In the distance, he noticed a body on the ground. He ran over to it and discovered that it was Harley Quinn. He gently picked her up and brought her to the ambulance. Jim ran over.
"Who was that?" asked Jim.
"The Joker's girl," replied Nightwing.
