Arthur was beginning to get suspicious of Merlin. Some days it would be fine but on others, Merlin would rush to finish his chores then he would disappear. When this happened he would always use the same excuse, probably without even realising it. It was always, 'Gaius needs help gathering ingredients.' But whenever he went to go get him for more chores, he wasn't there and Gaius hadn't seen him. This was beginning to happen more frequently too, hence the suspicion.

Right now Arthur and Merlin are in Arthur's chambers, Arthur reviewing the patrol schedule and Merlin cleaning.

Merlin looked over at Arthur to make sure he wasn't watching, his eyes flash gold and the fireplace is suddenly ash free, his last chore. "Arthur, Gaius needs help gathering some ingredients for his medicines, would it be alright if I left now and helped him?" Merlin asked sweetly, with his signature innocent puppy eyes. This was Arthur's chance, he was going to follow him.

"Yes that's fine but I'll need my armour polished later, " Arthur replied nonchalantly with a wave of his hand.

"Prat."

"I heard that!" Merlin was already out the door though Arthur could still hear his laughter echoing in the hall. Thirty seconds after Merlin left, Arthur got up and followed him. Merlin was hurrying down the hall, occasionally smiling at people he passed. He walked with a noticeable bounce with a carefree attitude. Soon the number of people in the halls decreased to none, and it became a lot easier to trail Merlin. Arthur noticed he was heading down an old hallway, towards one of the oldest parts of the citadel. The cool winter sun was shining through the windows, catching the dust they stirred as they walked.

Merlin had a skip in his step and a giddy smile on his face as he hurried through the hallways, occasionally looking over his shoulder. Which caused Arthur to dash behind a makeshift hiding spot. He was rushing towards an old ballroom that hasn't been used in decades. This part of the citadel has fallen into disrepair, cracked windows and dust on every surface. But that didn't do anything to lower his mood. He opened the door to the hall, turning around to check if anyone was about before ducking in and gently closing the door behind him.

Curious, Arthur quietly walked past the door to the staircase a little further down. Each step covered in a thick second skin of dust, muffling his footsteps. He arrived on an interior balcony of sorts. From this height, he could clearly see Merlin walking through the centre of the large space, his footsteps echoing loudly. Hundreds of thoughts were rushing through Arthur's head. What could Merlin possibly be doing in here, surrounded by sheet covered furniture. Wondering around the hall, fingertips occasionally brushing the sheets, he appeared to be waiting for someone.

Suddenly the door at the end of the great hall opened, revealing a shadowed figure. Merlin's face lit up in happiness.

"Gwaine! You came," Merlin stated happily. Gwaine?

"Of course I did love, I missed you," the man said sweetly, walking over to Merlin, giving him a chaste kiss on the lips. He grabbed Merlin's hand and pulled him along to a large window nook, overlooking the forest surrounding the kingdom. "I wish we didn't have to hide anymore," Gwaine told him, obviously upset at the situation.

The two sat down amongst blankets and pillows Arthur recognised. They were some of the ones he'd asked Merlin to deliver to some of the people in the lower town. He carefully adjusted his position on the floor so he could see the two better.

"I know, it pains me too but if we don't, we could be killed. But you never know, the laws may change some day," Merlin shrugged, before being pulled into a side hug. They didn't talk for a few minutes just relaxing and enjoying the contentment of being together.

"I have something to tell you-" they said at the same time. Gwaine laughed and told Merlin to go first.

"I have something very important to tell you and I need you to promise me that you'll let me finish before saying anything," Gwaine nodded and motioned for him to continue. "I- um, I...I've got magic. I only ever use it to protect people as much as I can. I use it for Arthur, to protect him from magical threats. No body has any idea of the amount of magical threats there are cause I try to take care of them before anyone finds out. Right now I'm barely able to sleep because vengeful people think the winter season is best to attack. And I don't know how to convince Arthur magics not evil because all he ever sees are the people trying to attack. He never sees the good it can do. And i- sorry I'm rambling again, I'll just shut up now," Merlin said.

"Merl-"

"Please don't hate me, I was born with it"

"Merlin"

"I understand if you don't want to be with me anymore"

"Merlin," Gwaine said softly, cupping the panicked man's face, "I don't hate you, I could never hate you. Especially not for this. Also, I love listening to your ramblings. Don't ever think that I don't want to hear you. Now just, look."

He cupped his hands together and muttered "lux papilio." A beautiful yellow butterfly made of light was sitting in his hand as he opened them. Merlin gasped, shock evident on his face. The butterfly flew out of Gwaines hands, leaving soft tendrils of light behind after its wings, and it landed on Merlin's nose. Causing him to chuckle softly.

"My mum taught me when I was young, so I could help her around the house. She also showed me many spells for my amusement. I grew up with magic all around me. It's not evil only the hearts of men are. And you my love, are the furthest from evil. And no that you know, I can help you with magical threats. I don't want you to have to deal with this alone for any longer," Gwaine confided. "Because, well, I love you," he said tentatively.

"You've got magic too?! That's so amazing i- wait. You love me?" Merlin asked shocked.

"Yes of course I do you magical idiot, I love you."

The shock slowly left Merlin's face, and he smiled softly. "I love you too Gwaine, I love you so much. You're the best thing that ever happened to me," He confessed.

"I wouldn't go that far," Gwaine laughed.

"Well I would, now just shut up and kiss me," Merlin spoke, amused. Gwaine happily obliged and lent in contacting their lips. The kiss was gentle and so full of emotions, happiness, love and excitement. While they kissed and smiled between kisses. The butterfly Gwaine had created flew around they're heads twirling happily.

They slowly broke apart and rested they're heads together, smiling, eyes closed. "Hold on, I have and idea," Merlin whispered. They opened they're eyes and Merlin leant back a fraction, muttering the same spell Gwaine had, creating his own blue light butterfly. It flew up to meet the other, both twirling around happily together. Both young men laughed and chuckled softly.

"fluitans lucis et caloris orbes" Merlin said, eyes glowing bright gold. Small floating orbs appeared in the air above and around the pair, casting a warm yellow glow into the air as the day became darker outside the window.

"The gold glow of your eyes when you do magic is incredible. I've never seen anything like it, even the best jewels couldn't compare," Gwaine admired, cause a blush to appear in Merlin's cheeks. He buried his face in his hands while Gwaine just softly laughed. They sat quietly wrapped in the soft blankets and pillows, just enjoying each others presence, curled up, watching the sun slowly sink towards the horizon.

Arthur was shocked to say the least. Two of the people closest to him were in a relationship together, and he'd never even noticed. But more importantly they both had magic! But they'd never done anything to harm him or anyone, Merlin openly admitted he had saved him countless times.

He got up and carefully left, heading back down the stairs, being as quiet as possible so he'd never be expected. As he was leaving, the only thought in his head was, 'Maybe it's time for me to reconsider my father's views on magic and same sex relationships. And possibly change a few laws.'

Merlin would never guess that his confession of magic to his lover would mark the beginning of the movement towards Albion.
