A week passed before the talent show arrived and the auditorium was full of students, faculty, parents and families. There were a ton of acts until it was one before Evie's, the girl pacing in the hall, dressed in a black and red lyrical dance dress, hair tied up in a half up, half down bun. "Here she is. She's been like this for 15 minutes." A fellow student said to Landon, Beth, Daniel and Lucas, the four thanking the student before heading Evie's way, the girl pausing with a worried look on her face.
"I can't do this, I can't..I.." She reached out for her brother and Lucas hugged her, calming her. "Hey, it's alright." Evie took a huge, shaky breath and shut her eyes, willing her panic to end. "Just breathe. Steady and slow." She could hear Lucas say as the minutes floated by until she moved to pull away and Lucas rested his hands on her shoulders, looking into her eyes. "You CAN do this. We're Anderson Hummels, remember? There's nothing we can't do." Evie nodded, taking a deep breath as she moved away and Beth smiled at her, fixing her makeup and hair. "Man, JJ is amazing!" Evie giggled and Beth smiled, swinging her cousin's hand.
When it came time for Evie's turn, the girl waited on her mark in first position while Lucas, Daniel, Beth and Landon stood in the right wing, smiling at her. As the curtain rose, the music started and Evie tuned in, ignoring her nerves.
My father never talked a lot
He just took a walk around the block
'Til all his anger took a hold of him
And then he'd hitMy Papa never cried a lot
He took the punches, but he never fought
'Til he said, "I'm leaving, and we'll take the kids"
So they didEvie moved with grace and emotion, portraying her life through dance, wanting the audience to understand her and her family. That they were more than a famous musical family, that they were more than the unit they like to show. That they were human and rose and fell many times.
I say they're just the ones who gave me life
But I truly am my parents' childEver since she was little, Evie had always defended her family against any bully or nasty word, sometimes at her own expense and when it came to Aurora, she had hoped to be the best role model to her just like Lucas is to her. She put more emotion into her moves as she jumped up and arched her back, falling to her feet once more as she spun and rolled her upper body in circles, eyes closed.
Scattered 'cross my family line
I'm so good at telling lies
That came from my papa's side
Told a million to surviveShe pushed and swayed, hands moving like water around her body as she took a chanced glance at her brother to see him smiling tearfully but proudly but doing another jump and falling onto her knees, reaching towards him without anyone knowing.
Scattered 'cross my family line
God, I have my father's eyes
But my sister's when I cry
I can run, but I can't hide
From my family line
