As genuinely unnerving as it was groundbreaking the creepypasta story of BEN drowned has been widely praised for not only establishing some of the central tropes used by later creepypasta narratives but also for its use of multimodal storytelling, employing various formats, episodic unfolding and audience interaction with the central elements to construct its universe and mythos.

Though it employs a number of older and more well established horror tropes, the way in which these threads were woven together has led to BEN drowned and its creator ‘Jadusable’  being credited with elevating the genre as a whole.

Unlike some creepypastas that evolved from a single self contained story posted on a message board, BEN drowned grew out of several posts initially presented as cries for help and expressly identified as ‘not copypasta’ with the poster insisting that they ‘need your help with this’. It was this initial presentation as truth and the fact that the story eventually grew onto other modes of storytelling that made it so unique and so unsettling.
